White House asked for USS John McCain to be 'out of sight' during Trump's visit to Japan: WSJ

From The Hill this evening:

The White House asked the U.S. Navy to make sure a warship named for late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) would be "out of sight" ahead of President Trump's visit to Japan over the weekend, according to an email obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

The email, dated May 15, included an outline of plans for the president's arrival, including instructions for the ship.

“USS John McCain needs to be out of sight,” the email reportedly read. “Please confirm #3 will be satisfied."

Officials, including acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, were aware of the concern about the USS John McCain and approved measures so that it would not be visible during Trump's visit, an official told the Wall Street Journal.

Before Trump's address, a tarp was hung over the USS John McCain's name and sailors were reportedly directed to remove any coverings that showed the ship's name. A barge was also reportedly moved near the ship to make it harder to see its name from the USS Wasp.

In a May 15 email to U.S. Navy and Air Force officials, a U.S. Indo-Pacific Command official outlined plans for the president’s arrival that he said had resulted from conversations between the White House Military Office and the Seventh Fleet of the U.S. Navy. In addition to instructions for the proper landing areas for helicopters and preparation for the USS Wasp—where the president was scheduled to speak—the official issued a third directive: “USS John McCain needs to be out of sight.”

“Please confirm #3 will be satisfied,” the official wrote.

There were discussions within the U.S. military over the past week about how to handle the warship, another U.S. official said. The ship is being repaired after a 2017 collision, and any ship undergoing such repair or maintenance would be difficult to move, officials said. A tarp was hung over the ship’s name ahead of the president’s trip, according to photos reviewed by the Journal, and sailors were directed to remove any coverings from the ship that bore its name. After the tarp was taken down, a barge was moved closer to the ship, obscuring its name. Sailors on the ship, who typically wear caps bearing its name, were given the day off during Mr. Trump’s visit, people familiar with the matter said.

Mr. Trump arrived in Japan on Saturday and on Tuesday—though still Monday in the U.S.—delivered Memorial Day remarks to troops aboard the USS Wasp, which is stationed along with the USS John McCain at Yokosuka Naval Base, south of Tokyo. Speaking to around 800 military men and women—some of whom wore “Make Aircrew Great Again” patches with a likeness of the president on their jumpsuits—Mr. Trump said he was joined by sailors from six other ships. He made no mention of the USS John McCain.

...no matter their politics. That, to me, is a prerequisite of the job. Lincoln had it; both Roosevelts; and yes, Reagan. Wilson did not, which is one reason why I feel he was a disaster as President. But Trump...? You can't even discuss it as a real issue with him, because he simply does not even comprehend what "magnanimity" is. He is quite simply a sociopath. He is beyond scum...

Trump is as petty as a child. But he crossed the line in dissing the whole ship and her company over his revenge against her namesake. Does he really think that ship is criticising him, or her crew are replicas of John McCain?

...without being told, like his resort staff hiding waitresses (when Trump dropped in) who didn't meet the bigoted Trump standard of race and beauty. In terms of his resort staff, they probably really were trying to protect fellow workers from Trump's insults and ire.

What I'm saying is gods know what that petty little man would have done to the McCain and those on board.
