The Trump administration will launch a human rights panel that stresses antigay 'natural law'

"Natural law" is one of the religious right's favorite phrases for why they oppose LGBTQ rights.

By Alex Bollinger Friday, May 31, 2019

The State Department announced that it will be launching a new advisory panel that will stress human rights in the context of “natural law.”

In contemporary politics, “natural law” is associated with conservative Christianity, especially opposition to reproductive and LGBTQ rights. Anti-LGBTQ activists use the phrase constantly to justify opposing basic human rights.

The State Department published a notice to create the Commission on Unalienable Rights. The notice says that the Commission “will provide the Secretary of State advice and recommendations concerning international human rights matters.”

“The Commission will provide fresh thinking about human rights discourse where such discourse has departed from our nation’s founding principles of natural law and natural rights,” the notice says.

At a Heritage Foundation panel last summer that was
organized adjacent to Pompeo's Ministerial on Religious
Freedom, panelists decried "human rights inflation," i.e.,
extending human rights based on sexual orientation and
gender identity.

Pompeo says his new commission will review "how we
think about human rights." I'm still trying to figure out
what his State Dept means when it says the HR discourse
"has departed from our nation’s founding principles of
natural law and natural rights”
