Colonoscopy... chicken broth for prep day?
My gf bought some chicken broth to mix/drink with that god-awful laxative junk you have to drink.
Low salt, fat free.
I don't know where she got such an idea.
Supposed to be clear liquid but ?????
Anyone heard of such a thing?

(My daughter has a colonoscopy once/year - such fun. She generally cuts out the solids/fiber earlier than they require, since it is hard for her to get a good clean-out. When they started (age 4), we used to have to do repeated enemas and the doctor still complained that she must not have followed the routine properly.)
Goood luck!
Start a day earlier. I did that and it made the doctor very happy

I had my first one this past year and was told that once you have one done when you are over 50 and the results are OK that you only need to get rechecked every 10 years now. Ask your doctor about this. Also, I drank the liquid stuff straight, without the lemon flavor and it was much better (sort of salty, which I liked).

(36,258 posts)Before that came about, I had a routine colonoscopy 3 years ago and everything was fine and I was told I wouldn't need another one for 10 years. Then the problem I have now showed up and I got another in in January of 2018. Looked good and the doctor told me I wouldn't need another for 10 years. The problem I had persisted though and various medications didn't work and as no biopsies were taken from the procedure I had in January, I got another colonoscopy in June of 2018. After that one, they didn't tell me I wouldn't need another procedure of at least 10 years even though the results were negative. Later in the year, I was referred to another doctor who wanted to do a more aggressive colonoscopy and I had my 4th one in January of this year. Results of that one was also negative.

1. Her surgery and antibiotics for diverticulitis may have shifted the spectrum of bacteria in her colon, causing the diarrhea and gas.
2. The current spectrum of bacteria may caused chronic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
3. I should learn about IBS and read about the classification of foods into Low (Good) and High (Bad) FODMAPs, and feed her "Low) food according to the FODMAP classification table.
That was the solution she needed. Her major triggers for diarrhea/gas are: mushrooms, onion, garlic and milk. Also problems are in all forms apple, peach, cherry, and fried meats and vegetables.
The FODMAP classification effort was largely done by scientists at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia). Here is the link to get you started. [link:www.monashfodmap.com|]

I felt the warm feeling when the liquid reached my arm, next thing I knew I awoke in the recovery room, with a nurse standing over me with juice and cookies.

(33,999 posts)So if someone just said, "Hey - I heard that cherry and grape are good for colonoscopy prep," especially someone at the knowledge level of asking if chicken broth is a clear liquid, it is more likely than not they would end up with the version with red dye in it since that is the most common version.

(11,122 posts)are your bowel movements regular? If you like the way your colon works right now, be prepared for a change. The totally cleansing preps kill the bacteria in your gut. That bacteria makes your bathroom routine what it is. It will take a few weeks to rebuild a bacterial culture in your gut. That new culture may work your colon differently.
Cancer isn't to be taken lightly, so a colonoscopy is needed. I just wish there was a way for them to leave some of your bacteria in to begin recolonizing your colon.
I hesitated to post this as it might be seen as a knock on the procedure, which at my age I have had done three times. I am not anti-colonoscopy. I guess you could say I was pro-gut biome. It was on my third colonoscopy that my regularity changed. I think they have more effective bacteria cleansing procedures now which wipes out the innards more thoroughly. I can see why the doctors like it, but it I just wish they would study the effects better. That said, I just took the prep without food. I think if I had used of the methods mentioned above would have helped.
Ilsa
(61,690 posts)to repopulate the gut might help.
Jakes Progress
(11,122 posts)But I think you might need some "starter" bacteria to grow your own stuff back. I wish some research would be done on this, because I think there is more involved than just bowel movements when you eradicate the biome you have generated over five or more decades. As one guy I talked to who had the same experience: "I just want my old shit back." (Sorry for the crudeness.)

I don't know of any way to jumpstart your own intestinal flora except to save some and ask the doctor to put it back. I know transplants have been done, but if your own is the good stuff, why risk using anyone else's feces?

(10,130 posts)I don't think the flavor packets add anything (unless you're really fond of artificial lemon). What helps is to keep the solution as cold as possible: that kills some of the taste.

(174 posts)I am scheduled for the prep next Thursday. Are you saying take a drink of pineapple juice, then chug the prep juice, then a swallow of water? I have had many problems with the prep over the years & have read these replies with great interest. I already have a container of strained pineapple juice, I'm just not sure how & when to use it.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)to put in liquid. I just used pineapple juice instead of water. That takes the edge off as I chugged it. I drink a few sips of water once the taste of it caught up, but if I had it to do over again now, I would have drank pineapple juice that I had set aside in the refrigerator. You can make the solution the day before you need to drink it and put it in the refrigerator, as BkackAdder pointed out, it tastes a lot better if it is cold.
My experience was that about a glass and a half was all that I needed, once it start clearing you out, it clears you out. You will initially pass solids, then a mixture of solids and liquid and by late night you will be passing liquids. What I realized that I could do is pay attention to the smell of the liquid, if you smell feces in it, you are not cleaned out enough. But if you smell your empty gut with no feces smell, you are clean and can stop drinking the stuff and keep passing out liquid, at that point you can also go to drinking just water or a mixture of water and apple or pineapple juice, just don't drink too much because you may not be able to clear it all and it may come out of you on the exam table. Don't worry about smelling what is coming out, you will smell everything without trying. If you have ever smelled hotdogs that have natural casings on them, that is about how your empty gut smells.
My procedure was around 11:30am, I stopped drinking liquid at around 7am and just passed out what was inside me, I was told by the nurse that I did not pass liquid, I was clean and dry, she said a lot of people aren't dry. I gave myself around 4 1/2 hours to get the final liquid inside me to what the medical team say.
I suggest that you take off an hour early from work on the prep night. Chug down the first drink of the prep solution at around 7-8pm, don't eat before unless it is candy such as lemon drops or pineapple candy. I chug a big swig of solution after the first glass every hour until around 11pm. If you have done it before you should know what happens, don't go far from a toilet.
I have done the prep twice because of my family history. I was started on digit exams during physicals at 26 years old. I like using the solution much more than I liked catching my feces and pulling samples to mail in (a sickening process for me that I hated, I was glad when colonoscopy came out).

(31,261 posts)The second time I did it, I used pineapple juice right away, mixed the stuff into it. Then I put the mixture into the refrigerator. I didn't use ice cubes or try to blast freeze it, so I don't know how that would work. I would guess that ice cubes would make chugging it more difficult. When I say chug, I mean take a glass out in four gigantic gulps. The pineapple juice helped mute the taste of the stuff so that I could take a followup gulp without gagging.

(33,999 posts)It is before, not after, that clear liquids are necessary.
My daughter's been through 13 of them (wiht 4 different doctors). The routine is always the same . . . only clear liquids the day before the scope. My spouse and i have each been through two.

I wanted to make the California border but did't have the motor. I would cycle from my rental car down the coast but each time I cycled back to my rental car then drove to the southern most point that I had reached on the bike, for example, if I cycled out 60-70 miles, I had to cycle 60-70 back to my rental car. I passed through one area early on in my trip that had incredible coastal beaches and great looking hotels right on the beach. The auto traffic in that area was insane though.
MurrayDelph
(5,292 posts)"West of Portland" could mean Tillamook, which is due West, or it could mean Astoria, since the Columbia River wends northwest from Portland. I'd travelled through Oregon many times before I ever visited that corner north of Tillamook. Now I live there.
Going down the coast is indeed beautiful, but a weird experience for someone from L.A. (as I was), since for much of California US 101 is a multi-lane divided highway, and for most of Oregon it's just a street; a very busy street in many places, but still just a street.
But along the way south, there are great beaches, some interesting resort towns, the Tillamook visitor center (until a few years ago, while one could get Tillamook cheese anywhere, Tillamook ice cream was a local delicacy), the aquarium in Newport, Sea Lion Caves in Florence, and West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon (a small, privately-owned zoo, where I have been able to pet and hold baby bobcats, caracals, foxes, lions, tigers, and bears).
