Apocalypse Newt

Gingrich's bizarre obsession with civilization-ending threats

Credit: AP/Wikipedia)

Newt Gingrich has changed a lot of positions over his many years in public life, but there are a few things about his worldview that are consistent. One is an obsession with apocalyptic or civilization-ending threats, often paired with the idea that Gingrich himself is alone (or nearly so) in recognizing the scale of the danger and in being equipped to deal with it.

My favorite example of this genre of Gingrich studies is a 1994 interview in which he declared “People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz.”

That line became an instant classic for Newt aficionados; less well-known is that Gingrich elaborated on the theme — at length — in the same interview, conducted by the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

“I see evil around me every day,” he says. He cites the widespread slaughter from Bosnia to Washington D.C. The German tourist killed by what Gingrich calls “a savage” from the urban jungle of Miami.

“We are at the edge of losing this civilization,” he says. “You get two more generations of what we had for the last 20 years and we’re in desperate trouble …

......

Gingrich also sees the supposed rise of Shariah in America as a threat to “Western civilization.”

“Stealth jihadis use political, cultural, societal, religious, intellectual tools; violent jihadis use violence,” he said in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute last year. “But in fact they’re both engaged in jihad and they’re both seeking to impose the same end state which is to replace Western civilization with a radical imposition of Sharia.”

...and, it did make me smile, but...

While Newtie is attempting to cuddle with the Jews and Israel, he's demonized and dehumanized an entire populace...Muslims. He seems silly and out of touch now, but I would imagine that's what a lot of people thought about Hitler in the early stages of his "career". Do I really think he could pull off the illegalization of an entire people? Not really. But, he could do a lot of damage and drag us into another, possibly the final, war. This doesn't even cover what he thinks of "poor" people or the undereducated. While he whines about "class warfare" now, as President, he would encourage it. It would give him the excuse to tighten the bonds further.

I spend a lot of time laughing and making jokes about the clowns that are competing for the GOP nomination, but there are times when I stop and really think about it. There isn't one of them that doesn't worry me. It's Newt & Co. that should be closing our ranks. It's up to us to prevent another Auschwitz.

Poop. Now I feel bad about ruining a lighthearted comment. I've had it done to me and it irritates me. I promise, I really do have a sense of humor and I'm far from using tinfoil for headwear!

Dec 2011

Seems like Gingrwich dont know that evil is who, and what is ruling today and for the past 5 decades.

It is evil that is invading and occupying peoples land and killing them everday, invading innocent people and destroying a nation based on lies for oil and control,so you could reap the windfall profits when they start the Nation building after the death, destruction, mayhem, and misery heaped upon the innocent people, for"Strategic interest" and the bogus and laughable claim that they are defending western civillation and Israel

The evil are those who thinks they own the world and can dictate can have this and that kind of weapons,it is the evil who has amssive quantites of Wmd while telling and threatenting others if they even think about trying to get one,it is the Evil who only supports the rich against the masses of hard working people like his "God Squad" Christian right Republican Conservative party.
The Evil that is drumming up even more war, with and all out concerted war to go after Iran
A war that already started wiht execution of their scientist and sabbatoge against them for the last 4 years.

We can not get anymore evil than Gingrich and those who think like him and those who support, and are in the same calls of one of the most evil americans who ever lived"Dick Cheney".
What is ruling the the world today is" EVIL",and its too bad that Gingrich and the rich and wealthy, their arrogance are blinding them to the truth.
If they really want to see evil, they should look in the mirror

... the one Smith accused of molesting her....

http://www.alternet.org/story/8695/

[ article ]

Journalists might also ask Gingrich about Smith's stepfather, Beverly Russell. Prior to the kids' disappearance, Russell was busily campaigning not for the depraved Democrats, but for Newt Gingrich and his minions. Russell was a Republican leader in South Carolina and local organizer of Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition. During the nine days that Susan Smith had the country hunting for a nonexistent black carjacker, Russell urged nationwide prayer for the two missing kids: "All we can do is pray. This is a nightmare." A prominent businessman and stockbroker, Russell married Smith's mom after she divorced Smith's dad (who later committed suicide). From the age of six, Russell raised Susan Smith in an upper-middle-class, church-going home. Gingrich's campaign comments notwithstanding, the home was free of counterculture and welfare-state influences. But Susan Smith attempted suicide at age 13, and at age 15 told authorities that her stepdad had been sexually molesting her for at least a year. [ / atricle ]

Now as to whether all thats true or not I can't say for certain.

Seriously Newt,

I thought you were supposed to be a writer of historical works. Well I suppose that only counts if you reduce history to poorly scripted, softcore sleeze, alt history nonsense (1945). Or to utterly absent, history that reinvents the southern perspective towards former slaves taking up arms in the service of the union. (The battle of the crater).

So I suppose I shouldn't be surprised about your commentary about the holocaust. Though really, the barest research would probably bear out problems with your suggestion of defending us from Auschwitz. I... I don't even have the patience to point out the problems with your suggestions that clearly are more rooted in the ridiculous ramblings of Jonah Goldberg than in anything even remotely resembling historical fact.

I would only have one question: Were the Nazi's an exotic bunch of foreignors to germany that secretly slipped in and started a series of revolutions and political movements that gradually took over Germany and ran it as an outside agency preaching foreign religions, homosexuality, academic admiration, and tolerance ubber alles?

Again. Moron!

Newt and his ilk would be positioned in front of the camp -- standing in between, as he says.
