Lyin', failin' Washington Post newsroom has grown from 575 to 850 since Bezos bought the paper

To answer a question someone asked later in the thread, I suppose the engineers are there to write stories about engineering.

Enabling them to grow.

And I believe the engineers are there to manage their website and online media. When Bezos bought the paper, he viewed the future of journalism to depend on using technology.

It's cheaper and I get 5% cash back from using my Amazon Prime card so I canceled my print subscription some time back. Save trees.

Which would be a good business omen. But as a techie, I'm happy if your guess is the right one.

real investment needs to be made in local newspapers and news sites, which are still bleeding jobs. That, of course, makes it easier for local politicians, businesses and law enforcement to act corruptly if they have even the slightest inclination.

There's always news about DC — although by reading this site and others, it's either always wrong or never enough — but local news is truly dying, in many cases because of vulture capitalism practiced by hedge-fund managers looking to make a quick million or 10.

Now Dallas has only one paper, the Dallas Morning News, and I still get a daily paper thrown in my front yard. The monthly cost is up to over 60 dollars a month. I feel like it is now a guilty pleasure for me, but this is the way best to know what is going on in the North Texas area. Plus, I like to read the paper with my morning coffee. I also make an effort to get a copy of the weekly Dallas Observer. This is a free paper and has excellent reporting on local issues.

I have an online subscription to the NYT. I read this every day. Before I retired, my company had a daily issue of the Wall Street Journal, I liked to read it too, get the conservative outlook on the world.
