To answer a question someone asked later in the thread, I suppose the engineers are there to write stories about engineering.

And I believe the engineers are there to manage their website and online media. When Bezos bought the paper, he viewed the future of journalism to depend on using technology.

(2,313 posts)real investment needs to be made in local newspapers and news sites, which are still bleeding jobs. That, of course, makes it easier for local politicians, businesses and law enforcement to act corruptly if they have even the slightest inclination.
There's always news about DC although by reading this site and others, it's either always wrong or never enough but local news is truly dying, in many cases because of vulture capitalism practiced by hedge-fund managers looking to make a quick million or 10.

(2,674 posts)Now Dallas has only one paper, the Dallas Morning News, and I still get a daily paper thrown in my front yard. The monthly cost is up to over 60 dollars a month. I feel like it is now a guilty pleasure for me, but this is the way best to know what is going on in the North Texas area. Plus, I like to read the paper with my morning coffee. I also make an effort to get a copy of the weekly Dallas Observer. This is a free paper and has excellent reporting on local issues.
I have an online subscription to the NYT. I read this every day. Before I retired, my company had a daily issue of the Wall Street Journal, I liked to read it too, get the conservative outlook on the world.
