This note was in Carlos locker today at work. I wish I could say it was the first time something like this has happened, but unfortunately Ive lost count of how many racially charged incidents there have been.
If you know me, then you likely also know my husband. You know that he is a guy who works hard for his family, who is a great dad and supporter of his kids, and he is a good husband who goes along with all the crazy things I ask him to do. He volunteers, he will always lend a hand. Hes also much more patient and tolerant than I am.
And also, for the record, hes from Texas. (And proudly sports a Texas tattoo)
And while Carlos is a tough guy and wont let this get him down (because he has seen and heard these things his whole life), the (hopefully) unintended consequence is that my children also see and hear these things. What they hear makes them feel that being Hispanic makes them less than, and that there is something inherently wrong with who they are.
Behind every racist comment or note shoved in a locker there is somebodys dad, husband, son, brother...
Words hurt. Ignorance hurts. Racism hurts.
And if you think that this isnt a problem, if you think its not happening here, it is. Right here in central Wisconsin.

Heartstrings here....my 2 grandsons are 1/2 Japanese...4 and 9. If this doesn't stop being standard acceptable behavior, encouraged, and not called out for what it is, I fear the time will come when their culture is called up....damn I hate 45...hate!

(31,911 posts)Trump has enabled and nurtured this sickening cancer of hate.
I wish we could round up all the deplorables, put them in their own state, and build a wall around it so we never have to deal with them ever again.

(63,221 posts)been creating and nurturing them all along. This is sad and disgusting. I am convinced that these people are taught to hate and that it is a mix of their ignorance and fear and the constant encouragement of right-wing politicians and media that are creating this toxic atmosphere of hate and intolerance.
This just needs to stop. There needs to be a balancing force on the other side that fosters understanding and tolerance. I wish we could just get rid of these people, but the reality is that we need to learn how to live together. Something needs to change. The churches could really help here, but they have unfortunately chosen to be part of the problem.

(3,803 posts)My family is OK -- I'm sure you're OK, too.
By your description, it sounds like you're probably an hour or so northwest of their neighborhood (Vilas county). You must know how it is around there. I just can't stand being around Trump cultists, and there are a lot.
The last time I was there the local convenience store stopped selling New Glarus beer because a bunch of the Trump fans complained about that "libtard bitch owner".
I should dig up pictures of the Trump bus that was parked along US 45 during a visit during July of 2016. It was a joke to me at the time -- it stopped being funny in November of that year.

(26,578 posts)Human resources should be trying to discover the culprit, with immediate firing when they do.
In the meantime they should be subjecting the employees to hours and hours of cultural sensitivity training until these sorts of incidents stop, or every time they happen.
Its management's job to deal with this sort of thing, and if they can't be bothered, then they need to be publicly humiliated.

(11,949 posts)If this happened at my workplace we would overturn hell to find and fire the guilty Party/Parities.
We were the first company in Florida to offer same-sex benefits way back in the mid 90s. And we had some incidents like this. Based on sexual preference, of course, not race. Even back then people were caught and fired. The Peckerwoods now know to keep their mouths zipped at work. Early in my career people assumed because I was a southern white man, they were safe making comments such as these.
Several years ago I was on the verge of firing a long-term employees. He made derogatory racial comments about one of his Puerto Rican coworkers.
He wisely decided to make a quick retirement. Without his union he would not have gotten that. Not that the union supported his activities, but their job is to represent. They were glad to see him go.
If your hubbies employer is not making an appropriate attempt to prevent this behavior, they put them selves a great legal and financial risk.
I sincerely hope in these incidents soon come to an end.

(32,581 posts)I'm sorry your friend had to see this but it's a reflection on some really small-minded bullies, not on your friend. Carlos should report it to his employer because it happened on company property. The boss or supervisor should know what's going on. The company manager would be required to address the problem and make sure it doesn't happen again..

(13,485 posts)If someone is convinced they should fear an other, they will put on false ego (arrogance) to combat that fear. Mix that with an ideology that promotes a scapegoat philosophy that alleviates their fear, sins and responsibilities, they rise above others with arrogant impunity in their own mind. Out of this rises bigotry, racism, fascism, etc.
It's an ugly cycle based on ignorance, weakness, propaganda and scapegoatism.

(21,646 posts)Whats with all the confederate flags ? Right over the boarder too
Cant get much more northern than Wisconsin & any who have been established there for generations probably had ancestors who fought against that flag and died.
But they dont care that flag just means proud to hate to them now.
Oh and WI resorts have plenty of visa immigrants or some of other less legal status working there - mostly Polish eastern europeon, so thats OK -dont want that cheap white help to go away
I was to Milwaukee last year it still is an OK place imo but Im sure most of the rest of Wisconsin stays away from there so maybe thats why its still cool but I doubt if POC from the city even want to go to those areas to seek work. I wouldnt .
I was lectured here years ago when I talked about how WI was turning RW & sad to say it has come to be that I wasnt just sensitive or mistaken
Hope Andrea and her family havent been voting republican

I am also 1/2 Japanese. Often, I am mistaken for Hispanic or Native American. They will be too. And treated badly enough to understand what it feels like to be other. They will be stronger and more empathetic because they will see firsthand how ugly racism is.
I am so sorry that Carlos has to deal with this at work. Be strong.

(22,065 posts)Equal Opportunity guidelines (we did at my company, along w/ other 'employment related issues' on an annual basis), and each employee then signs off on these policies (annually)...the company should be more aggressive in stopping this harassing behavior and take steps to try and determine who's the source of this hateful material, e.g., put out an award, clearly state that such actions will lead to an immediate termination, etc.
My company was very strict in compliance every year on these items and did not mess around either when a violation of such conditions occurred...no questions asked, etc. I know, because I lost two of my best computer programmers who couldn't resist in finding out if they got promoted and broke into a personnel database to see if they did...they got caught...it was stupid on their part, I was upset, for I lost one of my top coders...

(7,559 posts)I'm so disgusted with this that it took me several attempts to respond to this.
This is called workplace harassment and it's painfully obvious that it's discriminatory, which violates an amendment in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
I would have your family friend bring this to the HR immediately. He may not be the only person receiving these deplorable letter's.
Also, victims of harassment aren't always the person being harassed, victims can be other people who witness the act itself.
My heart goes out to you and your friend. Please keep us posted on the outcome.
