The Supreme Court could end democracy

Last edited Wed Jun 19, 2019, 01:11 PM - Edit history (2)

The Constitution says that a census shall be taken every 10 years. Presently, there is no question about whether or not you're a citizen.

Trump's Secretary of the Dept of Commerce, which in charge of the census, has added a question about citizenship. The Supreme Court is now deciding whether or not this question can/should be there.

Many estimates conclude that the citizenship question will result in a census under count of perhaps as many as five million people. That count decides where billions of dollars of federal money goes, and also has a major impact on how many congresspeople a state gets.

But here's the real issue. The question is designed to ensure that minorities are under counted. Many people, even though they are citizens, will not want to answer that question, or submit their census form, for a variety of reasons. Put bluntly, this is a Republican plot to under count the next census. And it's their wet dream for gerrymandering state districts for the next decade.

The result could mean minorty Republican control of the Senate and/or House from 2020 to 2030.

This case is now before the Supreme Court. If they allow the citizenship question to remain on the census form, America is over. The Republicans will control government for the next decade. We see what they've done to America virtually everyplace they run things. That one census question will give them virtually absolute power.

To me, there's only one hope. Chief Justice John Roberts, one of the five conservatives on the Court, might just vote against this. It's possible that he wouldn't want to go down in history as the Chief Justice who destroyed democracy. But who knows. He may just go on being the right wing prick he's been all along. We'll see.

I don't know when the decision on this case will come down, but it could well be "a date that will live in infamy."

(This explanation is a bit complex. Please read everything you can about this subject. The future of democracy in America is riding on this Supreme Court decision.)
