This DHS report is dated May 30 2019, and covers just ONE area of the many "detainee" sites.
severe overcrowding
A cell with a maximum capacity of 12 held 76 detainees
a cell with a maximum capacity of 8 held 41 detainees
a cell with a maximum capacity of 35 held 155 detainees
Border Patrol agents told us some of the detainees had been held in standing-room-only conditions for days or weeks.
We also observed staff discarding all other detainee property, such as backpacks, suitcases, and handbags, in the nearby dumpster.
We are concerned that overcrowding and prolonged detention represent an immediate risk to the health and safety not just of the detainees, but also DHS agents and officers.
With limited access to showers and clean clothing, detainees were wearing soiled clothing for days or weeks.
We also observed detainees standing on toilets in the cells to make room and gain breathing space, thus limiting access to the toilets.
Border Patrol agents told us some single adults had been held in standing-room-only conditions for days or weeks
Although CBP headquarters management has been aware of the situation at PDT for months and detailed staff to assist with custody management, DHS has not identified a process to alleviate issues with overcrowding.

(67,108 posts)There's absolutely no justification (not that there were good ones for the Japanese), we are not at war with fascists and imperialists, there is nowhere in this situation where we can claim to be the good guys.

Who in management authorized this, and for what purpose?!

(33,643 posts)There'd logically be very little room left for suitcases and the like.
It's pretty obvious that the Mango Mussolini's genius master-stroke is to make the situation for people seeking asylum so fucked up and unbearable that people will just decide 'maybe it's better here at home in Guatemala' ... and not come.

(60,010 posts)It also meets the UN's definition of Genocide:
ANY act with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.
2.causing serious bodily or mental harm
3. forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
( they are taking the babies away from mothers immediately after birth, now)
Family separation itself is considered genocide by the UN.

(15,539 posts)hmm....bet that didn't end up in a dumpster. Check the Border Patrol pockets.
Also, the excuse they use for disposing of their belongings is pretty weak: "it may get wet and pose a biohazard". Yeah, like cramming human beings into a small area with no access to showers or health care or whatever isn't a biohazard.
I have said this a gazillion times. I would never follow orders that were against my basic principles of human decency and I would quit the job immediately and live under a bridge out in the cold before I would be a party to any of this. There is no excuse for following orders that are inhumane. NONE.
