Well, this brightened my day a bit. re: McConnell

MoveOn sent me a snippet from Nate Silver's latest this morning. I like the thought, and hope he's right.

"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is only three points ahead of a generic Democratic opponent. And more than 60% of the voters in McConnell's home state of Kentucky are saying that 'it's time for someone new' to represent the state."

It will be easier for a Democrat to defeat an unknown than someone as powerful as McTurtle.

If Jefferson and Fayette counties turn out big percentages, that will be a real boost. Plus a couple of Congressional seats might flip as well.

From Wikipedia. This shows McConnell's last 5 contests and the last 4 of them he didn't even have to show up. They just lay down and gave it to him.

(and I've been voting since Reagan) that, in general, people tend to vote for the incumbent. They don't really study issues or positions (which is how the Creationists gained and kept so many offices in the 1980s and 90s). The name is recognizable, so the lever is pulled.

The Democrats have more activist organizations in place now, so I'm hoping more people will pay attention this time.

McConnell is just a ruthless campaigner with tons of money. He invented negative campaigning and will abuse the airwaves in an all-out assault to make his opponent look the worst of two. This is the year we attack his patriotism and allegiance to the US Constitution.
He bought off western ky with funding for an EPA superfund site. Now it funding for a Russian oligarch (and Putin loyalist) funded Aluminum processing plant in Bowling Green. Those urban centers need to be flipped to D to have a chance.

Senators are elected in a statewide vote.

In what possible way is "gerrymandering" a factor, unless you are claiming that the entire boundaries of the State of Kentucky were drawn to protect Mitch McConnell.

I’ve lived in Kentucky, and there have always been rumors about how McConnell keeps winning despite his record low approval ratings. Keep in mind that Ky. Has elected Democratic governors at the same time that McConnell won. His election machine is well-oiled and palms well greased.

That slimy Turtle has already said if a Democrat wins and he remains Speaker that he will block any Supreme Court picks. We need to take back the Senate and send that evil fossil back to his Kentucky Terrarium. So hopefully a very strong candidate steps up and every eligible democratic voter in Kentucky shows up and votes.

Some of the bottom rung Presidential Candidates need to see the light and run for the Senate, like Bullock in Montana.
