(and I've been voting since Reagan) that, in general, people tend to vote for the incumbent. They don't really study issues or positions (which is how the Creationists gained and kept so many offices in the 1980s and 90s). The name is recognizable, so the lever is pulled.

The Democrats have more activist organizations in place now, so I'm hoping more people will pay attention this time.

That slimy Turtle has already said if a Democrat wins and he remains Speaker that he will block any Supreme Court picks.
