A "make it look like an accident" death doesn't deter others. A public, gruesome execution multiplies the intimidation value of the killing, warning others who might be tempted to oppose the Saudi regime of what's in store for them. Watching the mastermind and architect of this atrocity getting off scot-free reinforces the lesson: "We are beyond your puny notions of justice."

Rumors are she heard the whole episode but the folks in the embassy didn't know she was out there.

Khashoggi was supposed to have simply disappeared, hence the dismemberment. His WaPo editor believes it's because he had gotten inside info on the nuclear deal with MBS, Kushner, Flynn and Trump.
