I believe that Republicans would jail an ex-Dem president in a heartbeat, if they could. (Lying about a blow job doesn't quite meet the standard.)
But no way in the world the Dems would ever push for jailing Trump. They would be afraid that any future Dem would then be jailed for jay walking.
I wish I was wrong about this.

(66,369 posts)to start impeachment proceedings is a deliberate ploy to avoid the staggeringly petty and irresponsible behavior on the part of the Republicans who impeached Bill Clinton.
I'm sure they knew he would never be convicted by the Senate, but that all anyone would remember is that Clinton was impeached. His Presidency was marred forever by the clowns in the GOP.
I'm glad we would never be that petty. But when real crimes and misdemeanors are committed, something has to be done.

(43,371 posts)American politics is grindingly incremental. Rump is so horrid that he deserves prison, literally. He is a traitor and has indeed committed a myriad number of felonies. He will, almost assuredly, get away with it all, but because these well-deserved punishments have now been broached and injected into the American zeitgeist, the Rethugs will DEFFO feel emboldened to unleash them (and they, unlike us, march in lockstop and NEVER give up and relent until they are beaten to a bloody pulp electorally) on the next Democratic POTUS.

(43,371 posts)The malevolent, malignant forces he is unleashing and re-invigorating in tens of millions of Americans (counting their families and future spawn we are talking over 100 million), along with the catastrophic, systemic ultra-RW, robber baron-friendly, white nationalist, de-regulatory, anti-human rights (at all levels outside of the fundie-WASP ideal) deconstruction/reformation of our entire superstructure of governance are going to take DECADES to recover from. It very well may produce, if he is re-elected and we fail to take back the Senate, a spiralling chain of events that culminate in the very dissolution of the Union by 2040 or so (I have went into depth on that future forward chain of events that would lead to this in the past here.)

(62,415 posts)they never have. If they ever get convicted - which seldom happens - they are usually fined which lets them off for pennies on the dollar.
This idea that all people are created equal and equal under the eyes of the law is some of the biggest horse shit ever sold in this country.
Just once, just once in my lifetime I would like to see a major politician, religious figure or business/ wealthy person spend time in a common jail.
I guess there were some WH staff that were jailed for Watergate, but they were the exception.
