(79,295 posts)Special Counsel Robert Mueller has agreed to testify before Congress on July 17 on his report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, the House Judiciary Committee and House Intelligence Committee announced Tuesday night.
The decision to issue subpoenas to compel Mueller to testify is a landmark move that will put an end to a months-long saga on Capitol Hill where lawmakers have for weeks fought to get access to information about whether President Trump obstructed justice.
Part of the congressional efforts, which took place over the last several months, have consisted of suing for documents related to the president and subpoenaing former Trump officials to testify about their time working with the president. But the White House has put forward a strategy of stonewalling Congress at every move, exerting executive privilege and preventing former officials and staffers from testifying. The House Foreign Affairs Committee did interview former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last month about his experience working with Trump on matters related to foreign policy, including Russia relations.

Good luck, rump, trying to block this testimony.

(14,173 posts)I don't think he can, but if he could. Or use some other way to prevent it. Not a witness, but the actual lead investigator involving his behaviour. That after bragging how Mueller found NOTHING.

(13,036 posts)and that he'll be trying to claim executive privilege even if he can't. He will do everything to attempt to discredit Mueller & Dems House investigation. Question is what other dangerous things is he going to do to try to change the narrative and news cycle.

"Robert Mueller has agreed to testify before Congress pursuant to subpoena. Russia attacked our democracy to help Trump win. Trump welcomed and used that help. As Mueller said, that should concern every American. And now, every American will get to hear directly from Mueller."

(17,302 posts)He's agreed to testify. I was worried he might not show, a la Billy Barr.

(2,191 posts)Even talking about the report would be something that, apparently, half of America won't have heard.
Since this will be public, I expect the GOP members to create their usual spectacle. Maybe one of them will rile him up.

(3,726 posts)I mean the Mueller report clearly indicated NO COLLUSION and NO OBSTRUCTION right?
So trump should be looking forward to him testifying publicly right?
It would only strengthen his image among his supporters and defy his critics right?
So trump will not do any preemptive bad mouthing of Mueller beforehand.
Right?

(7,627 posts)Even thought it was tragic for the pilot who died in that crash, it did not warrant wall to wall cover at the expense of other critical news like the john dean testimony.
Bombing Iran would probably mobilize the media for days.

(18,837 posts)...Trump can order everyone to stonewall except Mueller.
...Barr can deliver his 4 page "no collusion, no obstruction, complete exoneration" memo and Mueller can clean that shit RIGHT UP.
...Mueller can talk about how he provided summaries that emphatically state that "no collusion, no obstruction, complete exoneration" is a complete crock of shit, but Barr didn't want to have anything to do with them,
...Mueller will be asked directly, and will respond to, questions about not frying Trump's ass only because he is a sitting "president."
IS IT TOO LATE FOR JEFF SESSIONS TO FIRE MUELLER? WHAT ABOUT DON MCGHAN? HELLOOOOOO....ANYONE???
...and the best thing about this is that MSNBC will have wall-to-wall pundits discussing this between now and July 17th, and Trump will be twisting like a worm on a hook through ALL of it.

(7,402 posts)Enough said.
Bringing Mueller in before now would have been before we learned that Barr killed 7 different legal actions Mueller handed off to various District Attorney prosecutors. Now we will learn just which 7 they are and what possible reason Barr would have for ending those cases. I don't see how Barr can survive this given his already problematic past. And a gigantic obstruction of justice - better even than a pardon.

(46 posts)If the testimony does happen on the 17th, every media organization (print and broadcast) should run the headline: Muller confirms Russia interfered In 2016 Election To Help Trump.
Subtitle: Trump Campaign Welcomed Interference
There is enough info in the report to cover for the following two weeks until the August recess. Then let the republicans answer to their constituents about the report.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)is that trump and/or his campaign assisted Russian efforts.
Even Barr's 4 page summary clearly said there were Russian efforts to influence the vote -- a disinformation campaign and hacking.

(16,113 posts)I dont think the Dems are going to be able to get Mueller to say anything we want him to say. If he does introduce any new evidence (stuff not in the report) everyone is going to ask why he didnt have it in the report.
I think people will be disappointed when its done.
Perseus
(4,341 posts)BREAKING: Muller's refusal to subpoena piles up with that of other republicans, and the public doesn't hear about it anymore, Democrats do not seem to know what to do about enforcing the compliance of all the subpoenas that have been ignored so far.
I hope I am very wrong about it, but I have to think Muller will be threatened by Barr, and the same story will repeat. I mean, if Hope Hicks can ignore the subpoena with no repercussion, why not other people with power?
What a sham...
