(53,190 posts)This is what Ariel looked like in the cartoon:

So, obviously, the casting of a beautiful African-American woman to play Ariel caused the racist part of the Internet and the "you can't change anything ever" part to go completely apeshit.
You of course know what needs to happen: Casting Samuel L. Jackson as King Triton.

(15,888 posts)Being a mermaid isn't about being a certain race or looking a certain way; it's about having an earnest desire to lure men with your song and drag them to the bottom of the sea.
That's priceless! Thanks!

Wasn't that mythical being Santa Claus also supposed to be white, too, at least according to one of the vapid spokesblondes on Fox? And what about centaurs and selkies?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just love telling conservatives that St. Nicholas was Middle Eastern because it bothers them.

(97,620 posts)As the nation celebrated the national holiday that symbolizes all men being created equal, a small minority of mistreated Americans cranked up the Caucasian outrage machine to address an egregious injustice that threatened the happiness and well-being of people everywhere. But this time, the righteous indignation was not about Nikes, coffeemakers or even reality. This time, conservatives were concerned about a fictional fish-girl
Oh yes, the whites are at it again.
The ink had barely dried on Disneys announcement that Halle Bailey will star in the title role of The Little Mermaid when meteorologists at the White Weather Channel had to issue a flash flood warning because of a sudden deluge of white tears.
Most people, including myself, were elated that Halle Berry would get the chance to introduce herself to a new generation of Disney fans. They soon realized that the actress chosen to play Ariel was not the Oscar-winning actress from Monsters Ball. Instead, Disney execs chose one-half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, which caused a meltdown in the unseasoned sections of social media platforms because a black person had once again stolen a job from the marginalized group of unmelanated Americans. The hashtag #NotMyAriel immediately began trending on White Twitter.

However, on the extended weekend of this great American holiday, instead of focusing on the small number of fragile, furious racists, maybe we should concentrate on the important things. Even though a few people might be salty about Disneys casting, there is, indeed, a bright side:
Finally, theyll have some seasoning.

(58,785 posts)How about we all give each other a break and turn our focus on racists and all the other subsets of nasty bigotry regardless of the color of the bigot?

(58,785 posts)An arrow aimed out of the circle like they, or better yet a bigotry-avoiding some, wouldnt have bothered the way an arrow at me does.
The some that dont like that really wouldnt like the reality that roughly speaking only 2 billion of this planets 7 1/2 billion people are white. And thats if you throw in Middle Easterners and some others that some dont consider white. Big oh well to them. Thats reality, as is that most Christians are not white.
Lets also keep in mind, though, that if most people in this nation were bothered a black woman wouldnt have been cast.

(6,499 posts)Every culture has stories of mermaids. Almost all of them are pretty dark and grim. Even the story that the Disney animated film is very loosely based on is a lot darker.
EVERY CULTURE.
So that means black, blue, green, yellow, white, mermaids.
