made this ridiculous decision? It is perfectly legal for a person to profit off of their position as POTUS?

When a lawyer is defending a client, they might have multiple options to defend the client.

which one they choose is matter of strategy taking into the likelihood of success and the cost. This includes financial cost but also includes the cost of compromising other defenses (i.e. If I say I wasn't even there, then I can't argue that it was an accident)

In most cases, attacking the process (i.e. standing), is the fastest and cheapest and if unsuccessful, doesn't impact any other arguments that might be made. Furthermore they don't even have to go to trial. Standing is a pre-trial attack.

One could have an airtight defense, but going to trial is expensive and involves risks such as jury nullification and PR exposure. Whereas attacking the process is relatively cheap and riskless.

He just had a good legal team, that's all.

I doubt this case is dead though. Trump has property all over the world and this is just one single district. Lots of opportunity to try again with different property.
