Just as long as he goes away.

You're absolutely right. We need to make sure we use the most appropriate terminology, and call it what it is.

(1,980 posts)Because the girls were not pre-pubescent. I don't know why people intentionally get this wrong. An adult having sex with a 14-year old girl is illegal in most States but its not pedophilia and attraction to a girl of child bearing age is not biologically unnatural. This is no defense of Epstein or anyone having sex with teenage girls, but you are shooting yourself in the foot by making it out as something its not. Emphasizing the fact that this involves sex trafficking, which is the most disgusting part, is what we need to do. Pretending that men who like teenage girls are "pedophiles" is 100% incorrect.

In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is also 13....
Marrying right at child-bearing age makes sense when the life expectancy of the race is short and infant mortality is high. It's an evolution thing.
Nowadays, however, it's pretty icky, and can obviously be a sign of sexual abnormalities.

(8,144 posts)has taken back her complaint. Outside of these potential victims, and possibly more in the 13 and under age group, we are not talking pedophilia, not legally or psychiatrically speaking.
However, sex trafficking underage minors is both morally abhorrent and criminally consequential.
Horrible enough. And yes, from a social standpoint, many of his victims were children.
Haggis for Breakfast
(6,831 posts)than the actual deed. As not all girls mature in the same way, some of these girls may have appeared younger than their actual years. You must figure in the mentality of the rapist, too. If he thought she was 10 or 12, when she was 14, he STILL thinks he's raping a little girl.
Rape is rape, Cat.
You should be more outraged about the horrors these girls have been forced to endure, than whether or not their age puts them into some neat, tidy little definition. You're just playing word games, pal.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Pedophilia has a meaning, and this case doesn't meet that definition, at least not that we're aware of yet.
And I don't get the idea the person you're responding to 'is more upset about the word definition than (the crimes)' as you suggest.
That's bit of low blow, really.
Everything they said was factual reality. Some people are sticklers when it comes to facts, definitions, accuracy, REALITY in general. I am also one of these people.
Haggis for Breakfast
(6,831 posts)I'm not trying to be a jerk here. And yes, I too, care about facts and accuracy.
But we're talking about the rape (and yes, torture -- some of these girls were tied down, gagged and slapped around, while screaming, begging for it to stop) of LITTLE GIRLS here. I find that far more outrageous than whether or not one of them was 8 or 12 or 13 or whatever. If the argument is over whether or not the girls had yet begun to have monthly cycles (pedophilia is defined as sex or an unnatural sexual attraction to children), I still don't understand the complaint here. It's not like you can look at a girl and know that information. Girls do not all age in the same way.
RAPE IS RAPE.
And with all due respect, Sir, you were never a little girl.

(33,643 posts)I've pointed this out a few times over the years, it's pretty much never taken well ... people like to say 'pedophile' about people they don't like ... cause it sounds so nasty, like you're molesting 8 year olds.
There's probably 500 hebephiles in this world for every 1 pedophile, and that's because, as you say, it's not biologically unnatural, whereas pedophilia clearly IS.
It's socially unacceptable and illegal and should be punished in a great many cases (and most definitely in Epstein's case), but it's not some hugely freakish phenomenon.

I can see it now. A whole TV production by Fox News which will be the only news network left on TV. Maybe the Sinclair group will have their own by then, or the rising America First movement who are even more extreme. But a big production, where some undocumented immigrant who was one of the very few that had been convicted of murdering or raping a good white American citizen, in a Red border state, would face a grinning Donald wearing some military garb rife with fake medals waving one of the most controversial semi automatic military style weapons.

(95 posts)The legislatures refusal to clean up the voting system leaves a lot to luck on our part. If things look close we are screwed. I stopped I to my local BOE and asked questions about our new machines and the process. He said he was confident with the voting machines but when he pointed at the machine that would transmit the votes his comment was that is what he was uncertain of. We bought new machines from a company that was found guilty of vote tampering last election! How stupid do they have to be? It makes me physically ill!

(95 posts)Our new machines print out the recorded vote, names, issues etc., like a cash register receipt in English. But at the top of the receipt the voted names are transcribed into bar codes. Who the heck knows what that code actually means. So stupid. Then the receipt is run through a reader and the barcodes are read. Every vote would have to be manually counted to know the true outcome. The folks at the BOE Were totally unfazed. When we got black box voting I resigned from working the polls. I couldnt promise the people that their vote would be seen and counted. I still stop by and ask questions and follow through with current voting issues. They think Im crazy but I certainly dont care.

(95 posts)During our Kerry recount I got to be an observer. When we arrived at the BOE they had already chosen which precincts we would be recounting. It took my breath away! I had figured that would be a random pull in front of the observers. I was a volunteer for the Greens and felt uncomfortable questioning but no one else spoke up. Either the board is in on it or ignorant. Not sure which.

(58,347 posts)Yes, I'd love to see him in prison for any of the many reasons that he might have to be there.
But if he goes for sex trafficking and/or pedophilia, then the MAGA hats will have an easy excuse for supporting him by saying "That's stuff he did in secret - we had no way of knowing."
Donald going to jail for collusion et. al. doesn't give his supporters an out for supporting him, because all that shit was obvious even before the election. Of course, they would still say "We didn't know", but they'll have a more difficult time convincing people of their ignorance than if Donald goes for pedophilia.
Either way, he's in jail and the world is a better place.
But I don't want to give his supporters any reason to be able to back off their support of him - I want them to have to stew in the juices of their unethical choice to support him. Let them live with the guilt.
(though the average MAGA head isn't gonna feel guilty for anything, even were Donald to be brought to the Hague for war crimes or some other serious thing; but I hope you all get my point).
But yeah, I'll dance when he goes to jail and I don't care what the reason is.
