Among the many motives that the Catholic Church of Rome has for scapegoating LGBTers worldwide is that of attempting to distract world attention from the Churchs seemingly endless child rape scandals.
In the United States, nobody fights harder than the Catholic Church against proposed laws to lift the statutes of limitations for prosecution of child rape. And the Republican Party is the Churchs political ally in its war against such proposed legislation.
New York State Senator Thomas Duane, a Democrat, proposed Senate Bill S3333. The proposed legislation seeks to extend the statute of limitations in criminal and civil actions for certain sex offenses committed against a child less than eighteen years of age.
A Duane staffer told this reporter: If you think Cardinal Dolan fights hard against marriage for same-sex couples, you should know that that is nothing, compared to how fiercely Dolan fights against laws designed better to hold child rapists accountable for their crimes. The staffer added that Republican state legislators not Democrats lead the charge against the proposed legislation.

above bold emphasis mine.
So this the man that both the RNC and the DNC have tapped to offer closing benedictions?

(35,176 posts)I guess when you add in the children it gets harder to defend the decision. Hmmmm.

(21,010 posts)"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." Unfortunately that does nothing to deal with the problems.
There are factions in the Catholic Church that wish to take the church back several hundred years and erase any reforms or progress. This pope and his minions are fanatical conservatives with the rights of Women and Gays in their sights. This pope would seek to ban all forms of birth control. It is the expressed intention of the synod of bishops to influence the American political discussion and decision as much as possible, and NOT to the progressive side.
Religion is something best kept personal and completely out of politics. This christian fascism today can be replaced tomorrow with another bred of religious fascism, and one that might not be so tolerable of angry, insecure, old white men.
And no matter how it is dressed up, thousands upon thousands of persons, MOST OF THEM CHILDREN, have been heinously harmed by this current pontifical incarnation, who moved predator priests from parish to parish to avoid legal "difficulties."
The apologist faction here at DU can report on my postings all they like. It won't change a thing.

(35,176 posts)Seems there is all kind of reason to rag on gays when they get upset about what this looks like for them but when you put forth the information about how he is shielding predatory priests there is no one here defending the choice of using him at the Democratic convention. I find that highly informative.
I remember all the horrible posts when we found out about McClurkin during the run up to the last election and several others ending with the use of Rick Warren at the inauguration. I could not believe what I was reading here, all the excuses and all the "pony" posts and all the "What more do you want?" posts. All insulting, all equivocating to try to justify the choices. Same thing happened yesterday. Where all the people who would justify using him knowing now what he has done to shield the predators who raped and abused children?
I totally agree with you about religion. I have found it always to be uncomfortable, controlling and full of bigotry in one form or another. I wish it was not so. But even if it were not so it still has no place in our political system.
Keep on Raster. I don't come here often anymore but have been back for a little while off and on. I am glad there are still people here who will continue, we have to continue or we lose. I find the discussion here to be really angry and mean these days.

(21,010 posts)This is our lives. We are a valid, vibrant and a legitimate part of the human fabric. We are not going away. And I will not lay down and let anyone steamroller over our rights. I refuse to be intimidated. And I refuse to be content with leavings and scraps from the table. AND I AM FUCKING TIRED OF LGBT KIDS KILLING THEMSELVES because they are basically harassed to death.

(35,176 posts)to be quieter and more patient then the progress should be happening without much effort or force, with a sincere promise to give you all the rights and privileges that the rest of us have and that you deserve and be a continual push to see that it is being moved forward. It is simply the right thing to do. That is the bottom line, it is the right thing to do morally and constitutionally.
Even a continual national dialog that does not pander to bigots would be helpful. Going at this with education is great but it is slow and some can't be reached at all. Equality should be one of the top priorities of a Democratic administration, ANY administration. Yes there are lots of other things of great importance but by not making equality important you stay where you are or things get worse, a Federal ban on marriage equality, women are getting hit hard, undocumented workers are still facing horrors and we continue to live with fear rather than strength. We are so not United.
If people want LGBT to shut up about this, this thing that is your right and that you have never had, then they should be working to make it happen. That is the only response you should see on a board like this one. "What can we do best to help you?"
