Davino Watson told the immigration officers that he was a U.S. citizen. He told jail officials that he was a U.S. citizen. He told a judge. He repeated it again and again.
There is no right to a court-appointed attorney in immigration court. Watson, who was 23 and didn't have a high school diploma when he entered ICE custody, didn't have a lawyer of his own. So he hand-wrote a letter to immigration officers, attaching his father's naturalization certificate, and kept repeating his status to anyone who would listen.
Still, Immigration and Customs Enforcement kept Watson imprisoned as a deportable alien for nearly 3 1/2 years. Then it released Watson, who was from New York, in rural Alabama with no money and no explanation. Deportation proceedings continued for another year.
Watson was correct all along: He was a U.S. citizen. After he was released, he filed a complaint. Last year, a district judge in New York awarded him $82,500 in damages, citing "regrettable failures of the government."
On Monday, an appeals court ruled that Watson, now 32, is not eligible for any of that money because while his case is "disturbing," the statute of limitations actually expired while he was still in ICE custody without a lawyer.

We have to save the republic by resisting tooth and nail, and by voting Dem in 2020. This must stop. The camps must be shut down. The families must be reunited. There must be no roundups. No raids. No random checks for papers on our streets.
Those who have abused the inmates with the feeble excuse that it is 'a system overwhelmed' must be charged and tried for crimes against humanity, and I'm talking about the private-for-profit shareholders of companies like GEO solutions, the private equity firms that are investing, their directors and C-suite people, the guards, the middle managers, and the people in the Trump 'administration' all the way up through Steve Miller and Trump himself.

Why do you suppose this was not done? I mean - you're asking the question. That means that, like me, you have thought about it. So why do you think Obama and the Democratic Party leadership of that time did not take these actions?
And, a follow up question after you've thought about this one - does there seem any difference at all in the sheer criminality of the George W Bush administration versus the Trump administration?
Because, this will come up if we win in 2020. How do you think the Democratic party leaders at that time will deal with it? Or perhaps a better question is how do you think they should deal with it?

(8,252 posts)To make it harder for immigrants overall - The Trump administration increased immigration fees. I know of immigrants that cannot afford the new fees- People who have lost their Permanent Resident Cards and cannot afford to replace them due to the Ridiculous increased fees. They've increased the fees and wait times to convert from Permanent Resident to Citizen. I would hate for them to get caught up in one of these raids and not be able to produce their documentation. You would think that they could be found in the system but with this administration - they are hell bent on violating immigrant rights and it doesn't matter if they are documented or not. The plan is to have the least amount of immigrants.

We will also not have laborers for infrastructure rebuild and disaster reconstruction.

No matter how much we prepare for it, it's still very startling when it happens to you.

In New York City, ICE agents went to residences in the Harlem section of Manhattan and Brooklyns Sunset Park neighborhood, the person said. The agents were rejected by people at the residences because they didnt have warrants, but plan to return at least to Sunset Park tomorrow, according to the person.
A spokeswoman for ICE in New York said that the agency wont offer specific details related to enforcement operations. As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security, the spokeswoman said.
