These Dramatic Pictures Show The Huge Protests Against The Puerto Rico Governor

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Puerto Rico in protest against Governor Ricardo Rosselló following the leak of misogynistic and homophobic text messages made by Roselló.

Widespread protests in Puerto Rico's capital city of San Juan have continued for nearly a week amid calls for the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. The demonstrations come after Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism published nearly 900 pages of leaked text messages in which Rosselló engages in homophobic and misogynistic language with his inner circle.

The protests, which at times have been met with tear gas and force, come amid increasing pressure from the public to address government corruption, financial recession, and the emergency response following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

On Thursday, the governor said in a statement that his commitment to Puerto Rico is “stronger than ever,” making clear his intention to remain in office.

But as these pictures show, the protests against him show no sign of slowing down.

3. I was there during a teachers strike

For several days there were similar crowds in the streets. This was over ten years ago. I have no specific knowledge of the current situation, but am wary of reading too much into crowd pictures.

But there are captions that explain what's going on. The photos were just posted on there this afternoon. It's happening today and for the last 3 or 4 days.

6. Note the pale blue field in the flag many carry.

A historic flag originally meant as an anti-colonial symbol, today they are symbolic for PR independence. For much of its 120 years under US rule, independence supporters were a small percentage, historically about 5 percent (under 2%, as measured in the boycotted 2017 plebiscite where 97% casting ballots voted for Statehood. Thanks to NAFTA, Trump and Wall Street, I’d bet today support for independence stands at 35 percent — a big chunk of young people plus a few graybeards saying, “I told you so.”

7. They're blocking traffic and defacing government buildings!

We do okay on protests here in the United States, but for some reason, the voices given the biggest media play are folks complaining about traffic and the totally disrespectful attitude of some of the protesters. Why some of them even flipped off officers of the law!

8. What impresses me is that it's not just the women who are angry

There are just as many men protesting here as women, they're ALL making it THEIR issue.
These people are mad as hell! How bad could those emails have been?
