O’Hare Standoff: Federal Officials Detaining Three Children Of Undocumented Parents


Chicago lawyers, a representative from the Mexican Consulate and a congresswoman from Illinois have all met with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials to find out why three American citizen children are being detained at O’Hare Airport. They’ve argued for the release of the children.

Several immigration lawyers, advocates and reporters have gathered inside the international terminal at O’Hare to await the outcome of what is shaping up as a standoff between federal officials and the undocumented parents of the three children, all girls, ages 9, 10 and 13.

Activists here say the children were detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials and will not be released until their parents pick them up. They’ve been detained since 3 a.m. The children flew back from Mexico early this morning with a cousin who had a valid visitor visa, the activists say. The girls’ cousin is being detained, too.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers deemed the cousin "inadmissible," according to a statement issued by a department spokesperson. The statement didn't offer further details about why the cousin's status. "U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers have attempted numerous times today to reach family members to pick up the children. As of 2 pm [Central time] CBP Officers are still awaiting a legal guardian to arrive and pick the children up," the statement read.

Activists say that’s a trap and the parents are afraid of being detained and placed in deportation proceedings.

Using people's little kids like this is truly abhorrent. This republica. Party is anathema to all that is decent, kind and compassionate. They espouse their deep christian faith, values and morality but their actions, words and deeds display unfettered hypocrisy.

Party of Lincoln my ass. Party of Eisenhower.. Party of Teddy Roosevelt. Its preposterous. This Republican party is so far removed from the ideology of those men that I can't imagine any intellectually honest person remaining affiliated. I know some men and women have left the republican party in protest over Trump and the actions of the Republican senate. Some have been quite vocal and their disgust and disapproval. People like George Will, Max Boot, Justin Amash have been vocal and while I disagree with them politically on just about everything, I can respect them for proclaiming that this Republican party is so far removed from its roots as to be unrecognizable.

Republican has become synonymous with racism, bigotry and despotism. Some are vocal supporters of Trump's actions. They are sociopathic in their unashamed support. The rest are a silent majority of cowards. They either fully embrace Trump and McConnell and are afraid to lose their seats or they despise what has occurred but care more about their influence. It's the latter I truly despise. Sociopaths can't be helped. The rest who acknowledge the racism and bigotry but stay silent... they are the worst. They are the ones who have allowed the Republican party to become this. They understand they have breached their oath. They understand they are complicit but their greed and shame outpaces their honor.

They all need to go. The Republican Party promotes hate as much as any white nationalist group listed by the SPLC.
