(1,117 posts)So too will the Chicken Littles of demographic decline wait for Godot. We stand at the ready to repeat the mistakes of Paul Ehrlich's cult. This time, we age into oblivion.

Titled Population Bombed! Exploding the Link Between Overpopulation and Climate Change,
Desrochers and Szurmak write in their book that the predictions of doomsters have not been borne out by reality, and this is not the time to listen to them.
Desrochers notes that "population-growth catastrophism" dates back thousands of years, although it is now mostly associated with the British economist Thomas Malthus, who wrote a book in 1798

(31,279 posts)I just finished reading a devastating UN report on the catastrophic future with close to 8 billion beings on the planet with 83% of wildlife gone and 50% of the wild plants. A computer model puts the total breakdown in the year 2040 and we moving faster than that. So, this was just a rant in a safe place (I thought) and should have added

(1,117 posts)Economic decline happens when too few kids are born. Ask Japan. Computer models have shown that too.

I forget which, but the sentiment is the same. (1950's)
Disclosure...I have four children, yet only two grandchildren; so does that make up for that?

(6,675 posts)of two grandchildren, only one will (maybe) have child or children. How is that? Probably a good thing.
3 children, 2 grand children, probably no great grandchildren.

(90,774 posts)Basically, you parents thus replace yourselves, to reduce the mushrooming population. I always thought that made sense. We stopped at two, but that was only part of the reason. It was more because my body couldnt take it anymore. Those two pregnancies nearly killed me. Seriously.

(685 posts)you should say that to irresponsible and/or ignorant people who can't take care of themselves let alone a child.

(31,261 posts)I am not striking out at you, the basic issue you raised will play large if we move toward things like Medicare for All or Basic Guaranteed Income, some elements in society will push for deciding who "deserves" to have children and who does not. The thought is a troubling one because if society gets into deciding who can have children, what is next, deciding what the children should look like? Everytime such a state was toyed with in Hunan world history mass murder was the outcome.
I come from the camp that people should only have two biological children at the most and adopt unwanted children to fill out the family.

(3,416 posts)unless and until she or her family, friends start to lecture ME on how much resources and energy I use.
to each their own, as long as no one being chauffeured in limousines is telling me I'm using too much gasoline/energy/eating too much food. I chose to be child free because the planet has about 6 billion too many people on it. Other people breed, cool, but fuck 'em if they want to comment on my lifestyle, otherwise live and let live.
