Suburban women recoil as Trump dives into racial politics

AP

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) — Carol Evans approves of Donald Trump’s immigration policy. She gives him credit for the strong economy. But the Republican from the affluent Milwaukee suburbs of Waukesha County, a GOP bedrock in the state, just can’t commit to voting for the president next year like she did in 2016.

“I just don’t like the way he talks about other people,” Evans, a 79-year-old retired data entry supervisor, said recently as she walked through a shopping mall in Brookfield, Wisconsin, days after Trump fired off a racist tweet at Democratic congresswomen.

The president’s recent return to racial politics may be aimed at rallying his base of white working-class voters across rural America. But the risks of the strategy are glaring in conversations with women like Evans.

Many professional, suburban women — a critical voting bloc in the 2020 election — recoil at the abrasive, divisive rhetoric, exposing the president to a potential wave of opposition in key battlegrounds across the country.

In more than three dozen interviews by The Associated Press with women in critical suburbs, nearly all expressed dismay — or worse — at Trump’s racially polarizing insults and what was often described as unpresidential treatment of people. Even some who gave Trump credit for the economy or backed his crackdown on immigration acknowledged they were troubled or uncomfortable lining up behind the president.

that the racist, misogynist man they voted for is really, really, really racist & misogynistic. But still may vote for him.

I don't care what their excuses are for voting for him. It is just that...an excuse to cover their racism and misogyny. Yes, these are woman who think they are far superior to other women.

Trump showed people in 2016 who he was and these people voted for him anyway. I don't think they are going to "suddenly" decide to vote for the dem candidate. In 2018 what data shows they "flipped" their vote? or does the data show that voters that hadn't voted before or in the last election came out and voted?

however, it was so overwhelming, that people forgot about the scandals from the day before and from two days ago. Last week's scandals were ancient history.

So, when voters went to the polls, they were weighing Hillary and the recent revelation from the Comey letter versus 300 or so scandals from Trump. The media made Hillary's one scandal bigger than the 300 scandals from Trump because everybody had become numb to all the Trump scandals.

Make Trump's Racism and Misogyny the center of any campaign against him.

Campaign 1 against David Duke was where they hit him on every issue - politics and scandals. Democrats won by 10 points.
Campaign 2 focused on Duke's racism and KKK associations. Dem turnout skyrocketed and Duke lost by 22 points.

Or are they the "Susan Collins" sub-group of concerned voters who claim to have issues, but support Trump anyway.
