They see numbers we don’t. The fact republicans from safe districts as well as those at risk are leaving is the tell. Many of them are just now experiencing life in the minority. If they thought they were winning in 20 they would stick around.

They have lost the suburban women and the youth and emerging demographics are toxic for them.

17. Quite a few Republican incumbents don't want to play anymore

I saw a passing bit earlier today (sorry, I don't remember where) that said most of these retirements are in "safe" Republican districts, and I have no reason to doubt that. The upshot being that Democrats weren't looking at opportunities to flip these districts.

My short reply to that is, "Don't be too hasty to draw a conclusion." A lot of discussion has been had over the past 2½ years about the changing political landscape. Trump's base looks pretty steady in the mid-30 percent of the population, but I think a lot of voters are disenchanted with the Republican party. They've had their chance, and what did voters get? A tax cut bill that benefited the wealthy and blew a trillion dollar hole in the budget. It looks increasingly like Republican office-holders aren't very eager to explain to voters why their caucus was so impotent when they held the White House and both houses of Congress.

We could be looking at another blue wave, even a blue tsunami, in 2020. Get after it, people! Our efforts could reap some very handsome rewards.
