(28,493 posts)as I used to be able to. These days MSNBC seems to have a pay wall. Sigh.
I am someone without a regular TV. I can watch almost everything I want online. I used to be able to watch Rachel an hour or so after her show aired, but sometime in the recent past that changed. Too bad.

(20,868 posts)You'll usually get 80% on YouTube, by putting in Rachel Maddow full, And filtering by today's date. That should usually get you about 40 mins. For the last 5 minutes, her podcast of the entire show can be downloaded for free on Stitcher.com
However, I agree with you, about access to her shows. MSNBC are either incompetent or deliberate in not repeating her shows. Brian Williams is repeated twice during the night ffs ! Actually the second one was when Rachel's show was repeated.

(28,493 posts)TV to use Roku. I don't have an actual TV. I have a computer.
I do get to watch almost everything I want over the internet, and get along just fine without the things I can't watch.
Even back when I could watch Rachel a couple of hours after her show was broadcast, I often got quite impatient because of the way she repeated herself, cramming three or four pieces of information into 30 minutes of talking. Honest, Rachel, I heard you the first time. Now tell me something new.

(11,197 posts)There are sites that you can stream MSNBC or CNN for free. I frequently run errands after work and plugged in via ear buds to my phone listening to MSNBC.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,493 posts)That's what I always come up against. No TV. No cable. No satellite. Just this computer and the internet.

(28,493 posts)However, live streaming means all the commercials, and I've gotten very spoiled. If I watch, say Rachel Maddow, a couple of hours later, no commercials.
Alas, I will have to do without.

(5,378 posts)I mean they believe all that Fox garbage. They snub real news stations. I guess they are sick of hearing Rachel say there is something there (because there is) if nothing pans out. The dems got control of Congress and it is like nothing happened because those corrupt assholes still do not pay attention to subpoenas. It is sickening. This makes me believe that he will have another four years. The plan again is to dampen enthusiasm and then allow Russia to meddle again. So depressing...

(38,958 posts)I disagree with the reasoning you stated. In my case it has nothing to do with Impeachment. I am simply fed up with the 24/7 Breaking News of Manufactured Drama Infotainment Model of their programing. It is only designed to fill airtime between ads for drugs we never knew we needed.
rownesheck
(2,343 posts)Exactly. I don't watch any of those shows. I vote solidly blue. TV "news" is nothing but wall to wall horse hockey. The damn commercials for prescription drugs are infuriating! I'm surprised any one watches that crap at all. No one should get caught up in "ratings". In fact, I treat "ratings" like the Grammy awards. When someone wins a Grammy, it basically tells me "oh, so that's the music i SHOULDN'T listen to."

I still like to hear perspectives given by Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell, but since its mixed with so much garbage I DVR it and can fast forward through the parts I don't want. The rest of cable news I've shut off completely, its just so annoying. For daytime sometimes I will tune in to Free Speech TV, and get news from Democracy Now and PBS News hour.
MSNBC and CNN are horseshit.

(3,246 posts)It is absolutely trump fatigue. I didn't know her ratings were going down, but I'm not surprised. It's not her, it's Nancy Pelosi. I simply can't handle the emotional weight of knowing how bad it is and feeling utterly powerless as a democrat. Nancy Pelosi is simply the wrong person for this moment. We need democrats who are fierce and vocal. We need Benghazi hearings -- non stop. I've tuned out for my mental health.
I still watch but not as I used to. We have the information but not enough is being done about it. It's not an issue with Rachel, it's an issue with the folks we've voted for in Congress. Everyone I've spoken to have given up on Congress doing their duty. It's frustrating.

(1,673 posts)Trump was going nowhere and would serve 4 years. So much focus on Russia when he has done a million other things in his presidency which warrant impeachment.
For example, taking in money from foreign governments and leaders through his private hotels warrants impeachment in and of itself. He has violated the emoluments clause from day 1.

(2,808 posts)I cancelled cable tv april 01 2019, after mueller report was released, due to disillusionment & not wanting to listen to fox braggadocio vs liberal monday morning quarterbacking. I now just get pbs newshour free using rabbit ears on the flat screen.
I thought surely trump would get his comeuppance from mueller since there were so many blatant or implied violations trump was guilty of, but then he rec'd his 'mueller pardon' and I lost faith in justice being rendered, the bloviating windbag's 'no collusion' chant emboldened. I suspect this was a trend amongst other democrats and truth seekers - while maybe not a cancellation of cable per se, but a cancellation of interest in liberal reporting of mueller, due to the letdown it created amongst us.
So it's the right wing happy time I think a good reason in part, for the surge in televised right wing nut jobs rise in ratings.
There's another factor I've noted for higher RW ratings, that some UNtelevised rightwing nut jobs & businesses will leave their cable tvs on to fox an inordinately high time during the day & even night (without really watching) compared with democrats like myself who more generally wouldn't do that since a tv uses power which increases your electric bill and wastes energy, rationale which generally means little to RWNJs and climate change deniers. This I believe would inflate ratings for right wing tv shows. But this has probably been 'de rigueur' for years, rather than mueller induced.
(I be lucky, my old time $60/month underground cable service you can cancel & reconnect at will if say you go on vacation, unlike dish & satellite which have long term year or two contracts at $80 rigid per month or so. Disconnecting for 5 months (till sept football season!) saves about $300 altho amanpour constant reruns & pbs newshour are, well, not really top of the line, but adequate enough for a daily news report. Anybody ever heard of 'Poldark', eh, not bad! forget 'atlantis' & 'jamestown' tho, not good....) Upside is, FREE.

Best of all, no commercials!
I think television is the worst possible medium for news and opinion. I read all my news.
Centrist television and radio, what little there is of it, doesn't seem to be pulling anyone out of the right wing media cesspool.
Hateful television and radio got us into the mess we are in. These media corporations only want eyes and ears for the advertising they sell. They can't have mine, and I won't pay them to deliver that crap to my house.

(96,882 posts)Certainly not the evening opinion shows (I don't watch any). Maddow and Hannity basically appeal to people who already agree with their positions and want their personal opinions and beliefs reinforced. I can do without that.

(1,835 posts)Many people are on vacation and Rachel is away a lot. The ratings that count are in September. I watch Rachel, on the following day of the broadcast, on my iPhone on my way to work. Do they count the people who watch it "on Demand"? I don't know how they calculate these numbers.

(4,700 posts)But I think a lot of Democrats had so much hope placed in the Mueller report that many just got tired of watching Pussy Grabber apparently skate by yet again. Although I DO think Pussy Grabber is about to crash through the ice in the very near future.
But back to Rachel-- there is always a lot of "breaking news" on her show that leads one to think that something "big" is about to happen. The thing is it's like that every night on her show, but for me-- as much as I like her-- I got tired. I still watch her show but not as regularly as I did during the Mueller investigation.

(24,808 posts)breaking news that she had to throw away the script that she and her staff had slaved over all day?
Could it be that in reality shes just winging it? That might account for the 17 minutes of wheel spinning that opens each show.

I laugh when I see anyone suggesting that people are losing interest in watching Rachel Maddow.
If it happens continuously for several months over the next 9 months starting in September - then there is a genuine case to state that people are tuning out....

(7,229 posts)as I drive to work in the morning. It used to be entirely ad-free, but a few months ago they started to slip in one short ad in the 40-minute block. I don't watch cable anymore; it's unwatchable. (The endless repetitive drug and insurance commercials drive me round the bend.) The podcast is a great option, and fortunately, she doesn't depend on a lot of visuals.
I think Rachel's ratings are falling because of Trump fatigue. They'll probably pick back up in the 2020 election season. If a Democrat is elected, her ratings will roll downhill because she's at her best when exposing the depravity of Republican leaders. That's just how it is.
I may stop listening to her after Trump is out of office. She's can be too didactic at times, and I don't care for her interviews because she seems to do all the talking.
