Given that a level-headed incumbent nearly lost his seat, the soon-to-be candidate of that party might find the going quite a bit tougher. Particularly if he or she is pro-Trump. I sure hope that Dems will be able to field a top-notch candidate.

25. NPR has interviewed Hurd a number of times in recent months. You could absolutely hear

the increasingly utter exasperation in his voice each time - literally, "I can't believe I'm back on here having to defend this motherfucker!!"

I could clearly tell his heart was no longer in it, and his Congressional career was not long for this world.

Gina Ortiz Jones is running for the seat again and she only lost the last time to Hurd by 1,100 votes. Hurd very well may have lost to her this time, but the GOP doesn't have anyone else comparable to Hurd in the district to try and fill Hurd's shoes.

Texas GOP are losing their shit over this loss and the potential loss to the NRCC on a national level. A healthy chunk of their fundraising comes in via Texas members.

I'm happy to report moral is low among Republicans both nationally and locally in Texas tonight.

30. I have a lot of hope for the district.

Wish I could give a snap take on my feels for that region, but I haven't been thru that part of West Texas in years. It's an astoundingly vast district. From when I've considered road trip treks out there, I know that to do it right, it'll take days and good confidence in my five year old car (she's a great vehicle, but ya know, the expanses between stops are imposing). I'd like to go to El Paso this year - taking in some of the 23rd along one of the legs.

What does occur to me is the potential for shenanigans on the rolls and at the polls. We cannot afford to take the district for granted. Fired up Dems in the region (everywhere, really) would do good to become deputy voter registrars by getting VDR training or sitting for the tests in the counties they frequent. Just search: VDR training, Texas, and the name of the county you're interested in. Otherwise, obviously, poll watchers and vigilance of the practices at voting locations are more crucial than ever.
