2. I think he's beginning to feel slimy from associating with the GOP. His comment about still

living up to his oath to protect the Constitution against enemies, both when he joined the CIA and when he became a member of Congress, plus his comment about "pursu(ing) opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security," suggests that he understands who our real enemies are.Besides, it must be hard to reconcile being black and being Republican.

3. I get the sense Hurd is a patriot

in the sense of not wanting to see our country sold out.

I hadn’t put together his background with his future plans until your post. It does sound like he could be trying to help save our country rather than simply enrich himself like most others. One hopes, anyway.
