That is one of their original lies, at least since Reagan. And let's face it, the republicans are defined today by the likes of Reagan and the cast of characters following in his footsteps over the next four decades. They said it loudly, they boasted about it incessantly, they prided themselves on it, they identified with the idea as a cornerstone of their conservative ideology. The only thing they forgot to do was actually act upon it.
