(42,770 posts)It broke me heart. He said he was so grateful to be a part of it all down there. Beto always says it's a special place. He was telling the truth. Makes me want to visit.

(20,049 posts)It's still my state and they're still my people. It was just the decent thing to do.
I know a lot of Texans who sent flowers who weren't able to attend due to our geographic limitations.

(20,049 posts)We've lowered the bar so much common decency now seems kinder than it should. This is what we all once did when on of ours was in pain and need. We've just forgotten, I think. Sending flowers was a basic kindness I hope was well received.

lunatica
(53,410 posts)People will greet him and talk to him, and a few people will naturally take care of him because some people do that all the time. El Paso is a tight community of open acceptance of ethnic and racial contrasts. The big city dynamic of being lost in a sea of people doesnt exist there. People will go out of their way to go see him and check on his needs.

(53,410 posts)Hes a symbol of El Paso now. The embodiment of a citys tragic loss. The community needs him now as part of their recovery. They want to be kind and caring because he will give them back the kindness they need. The fact that so many were killed makes El Paso a city in mourning and that means the embrace of community is needed and vital. Shared grief is very powerful. Just think how the aftereffects of 911 still resonate with us. When Jon Stewart fought for the first responders in Congress it was the community support the entire country gave him and them that made even Moscow Mitch fold. Community is a powerful thing even when what brings us together happened 20 years ago, or in past history.

(53,410 posts)The entire community is grieving and they need him and each other. When tragedy like that happens to so many the community bonds like never before. El Paso will never forget this shared horror and grief. They will help each other for a very long time. No one will be forgotten.
