I would like to make an announcement today:

After forty years as a practicing dentist and erstwhile “businessman” here in Philadelphia, I have sold my practice to a local dental conglomerate. To answer three obvious questions before I begin: yes I have a contract for up to eight years to practice in my former office, yes I got my price which was substantial, and yes I’m very happy and by any measure, an excellent, devoted employee.

All that being said, I want to express the reasons I sold my life’s work. First, I’m 66 years old and you can make a case that the practice is at its peak value. Second, the technology of modern dentistry requires a huge investment which in no way could I afford and it is unfair for my loyal patient population to not have access to the best care possible. We are talking perhaps $300,000 in investment which for me would have been catastrophic economically because the combination of diminished returns due to insurance reimbursement and rapid depreciation of such assets would essentially bankrupt my retirement. Third, as a dentist you never know when you’ll have a career-ending injury or condition/disease. Back issues, neurological issues, cardiac issues, and of course cancer (which is very prevalent in the dental population educated in my era - due in no small part to massive exposure to horrifyingly dangerous chemicals utilized in those days, not a danger to patients but definitely to practitioners/students).

Fourthly, and possibly most importantly, we are headed to a recession through which I would not survive economically. Many years ago in Aphilly there was a bookstore chain called Encore Books. The owner is and was a very shrewd and sharp guy. The day Amazon announced that it would be selling books online, he put his business up for sale and I believe that Rite Aid purchased it for millions. It failed in the short run. The point is you have to know when to get out. If this bastard in the White House does what I think he’s going to do , we are in for a rough ride. I’ve managed through several recessions, the last one nearly (literally) killed me. I wasn’t going to go through it again. No way no how

I’ve been here at DU for over fifteen years and consider it like my family but better. I look forward to many more years communing with all of you and fighting the good fight. I would suggest that we temper our angers manifest during the primaries and focus upon the singular goal of defeating the malignantly narcissistic sociopath and his minions. Good luck to us all and good luck to The United States of America.

It seems to me we have two obligations going forward in the Trump era:

1. Fight like hell for Democratic candidates and principles;
2. Preserve one's self and security.

Trump and his crew are wrecking our nation. We have to fight them.

At the same time, one cannot fight if one is ruined financially, physically or emotionally.

Timing is everything. I was reminded recently of when Johnny Carson retired. He said goodbye, didn't look back and didn't try to stay in the limelight. He knew it was time to go and he exited like the consulate pro has always was.

I believe you've made good choices, my friend, and I wish you luck with your amended practice and future retirement!

A friend of mine sold his medical practice to the big hospital system here-- continues working but now at a nice salary, and his employees now all get better benefits than he was able to give. It's been a couple years, and his stress level has gone down a lot. The great stress for him was always the business part, not the medical part-- making payroll, dealing with the insurance company, etc-- so he's actually able to enjoy the patient contact better.

It's weird to hear him extol the benefits of being an employee after decades of listening to him decry the horror and awfulness of "socialized medicine" where most doctors are indeed employees of the system!

I hope you are already feeling more relaxed and can go on vacations now and take days off!

My wife and I owned a business for thirty six years. We got out a little over five years ago, and I couldn’t be happier. When it was good, it was very good. When it got bad, we decided to pack it up on our terms, which I will never regret. The decision always comes with some soul searching, apprehension and consternation, but it sounds like you’ve planned well, and to that end, congratulations.

We’ve shored up too, though we’ve got a house in a contingency contract that worries me-buyer’s house is slow to move. But the Seattle crazy real estate boom is over and we got out just in time. Otherwise we’ve gotten out of a formerly lucrative market and are padded against things as best we can be. Mr. Bear is still in a viable industry and I’m retired (young-I’m not 65 for a few months yet!).

I worry about our kids but I think they’ll be okay. If we can get the monster out we might survive, but it could get grim.

Got plans for other activities?

for you and your family.

I agree with you that we are heading towards a recession, I predicted it last year and said it would happen this year, even that some people doubted it and still do, I still believe it is going to happen before the end of this year.

The abuses, bad decisions, which have been done on purpose I might say, are taking a fast toll on our economy. Destruction happens much faster than construction, the towers took hours to fall in 9/11, but took years to build, it is the same with the economy and we are going down a cliff with this administration.

I am very happy for you, you did the right thing, and after so many years of studying to become a dentist, and work, you deserve to rip the fruits of your labour. Well done!

I was telling my wife yesterday how difficult it is nowadays to compete against the big guys, if you don't sell they would have found a way to crash you, that is the new American way of doing business, crash the little guy, no regulations to stop you.

Thanks for the thread. It brings up a bunch of issues from my past and helps me reflect on what I have today. I'm a dentist as well (as my username reveals), and the looming recession gives me pause. I'm in the Baltimore suburbs. In 2005 I opened my own office from scratch, borrowing a mind-blowing amount of money over the span of two years. I grew steadily, but the change in the level of services patients were agreeing to was obvious as time went on. From 2007 - 2008, emergencies that could be treated with endo/core/crown were instead only agreeing to extraction. Some people were getting cleanings once a year. Perio maintenance was incredibly hard to convince people to pay out of pocket for. When my loan's monthly nut went up, as scheduled, from $6k/mo to $9k/mo, the bank wouldn't hear it that I couldn't pay. I walked away from the practice and let them take it. I've spent the last eleven years rebuilding my life, but fortunately my marriage and my optimistic outlook on life survived. I've been an employee of a corporate chain for the past four years, and they don't influence my clinical decisions. I'm deliriously happy, have a steady income, and best of all I can leave for the day at 5 pm and not have to stress about payroll, supplies, rent, etc. I'm sure I can weather the financial storm pretty well where I am.
Nicely done on making a few bucks before you get out!

I'm happy for him but not for me or mr liberty. It happened very quickly, and two young dentists bought it. Small, rural town: He had a practice so solid that you had to be born into or marry into a family that were already patients, and most of his patients were families who had started with that practice when his father was the dentist. Needless to say, his dad's been gone for years now; when I married in the dad had been retired for some years, and that was nearly 25 years ago now.

I had been with him pretty close to when he got out of dental school. Good solid practice with personal attention when problems cropped up. No flat screen x-ray displays or fancy equipment. But he saw that he'd probably need to start investing in new equipment and he was tired of dealing with the paperwork that happens with employees. After my dental insurance stopped with my exit from the full time job to retirement benefits that don't cover dental, his prices were so reasonable I never needed to buy a separate policy.

Now I have dental insurance with a new dentist (in network!)

Good luck and long life with less stress!

As one of the fifty-somethings pushed out of the job market by the previous recession, I had to live on, and consequently lost, my private pensions (got evicted, too -- but thanks to generous DU-ers, endured only one night of homlesseness). Fortunately, I had earned enough during my working years to make the social security clerk's eyes pop when I filed for early retirement. But rather than taking up knitting and chair-rocking, I invested one of my checks into turning what I had enjoyed doing when not working into a permanent part-time venture -- and adventure.

So congratulations on crossing the rat race finish line with the ability to determine how to live out the rest of your life on YOUR terms (very wise of you to not stop working "cold turkey"). Now the only "investing" left to be done is in enjoying yourself as long as your health (and wealth) permits!

My teeth are in bad shape, even given my age (my dentist told me this). I just go through a year of really high dental charges. I am going back at the end of September for a cleaning and will discuss quite frankly what I can expect and how I can work it into my budget. It won't be easy. But I am too vain to go without fixing a front chipped tooth or any chipped tooth for that matter.

One thing that has changed: I have a very clean mouth. I brush, floss, whiten, rinse all the time. I just hope it pays off and I can stay the course...

with some short term options available post-sale.

And I miss Encore Books. Used to go to one not far from me and was highly upset when it was shuttered (leaving me with Barnes and Noble, where the one nearest to me was eventually shuttered too).

Our family dentist (and friend) of many years retired 3 years ago, because his back could not take it any more. He didn't have the digital radiograph equipment etc and I suspect, like you, did not want to spend his retirement funds to buy it at this late date.

He sold to a younger dentist who is fine, and some of the old staff is still there. But since it is 30 miles one way, and in SoCal traffic it can take an hour to get there, I'm hoping to find a new practice closer to home. I'm sure your loyal patients will miss you as we miss our friend. But I'm also glad he is still young enough and fit enough to enjoy the rest of his time here. I hope you can do the same! Cheers!

My dentist retired quite suddenly last year because his back just couldn't take it any more and surgery to fix it would be far more than the benefit. I had just seen him about two weeks before when I got the letter saying he'd retired. So sad. But he had good doctors in his practice who have taken it over, so it's still a nice independent dental office.

Enjoy your well-earned retirement!

Did almost the same with my biz. Carpet and upholstery cleaning...needed new truck, a new truck mount cleaning machine, upgrade the computers...sold my client list to a very good fellow cleaner...was going to go on a “farewell tour” with him to introduce him to my clients...two weeks later had a T.I.A. (Mini-stroke)...never did do the tour...that was 7 years ago...turned 67 this year...love my life as it is now.

Congratulations!

We were very happy with our dentist who retired a couple of years ago - the practice went to a bunch of young bucks. They immediately remodeled, expanded and started bringing in fancy new equipment while insisting we adopt their dental care "plan". Needless to say, their rates increased with a lot more of "I'd advise we do this treatment/procedure".

We are currently looking for an old school type practice which doesn't schedule and time everything to the minute and second - especially one which doesn't use those annoying, Startrek-like communicators upon their chests. Sheesh, I hate those things.

Anyway, again good luck and take some well deserved time for yourself.

Just retired from teaching myself, and so far, so good. Am enjoying not HAVING to get up and go to work, but with subbing, can do it if I want. But I know how you feel. With Trump's blessings, DeVos is decimating public education, and since new teachers are cheaper to hire than those of us with experience, combined with her love of charter schools and diverting public funds to private schools, the writing is on the wall. But I see it as more time to fight Trump. I can get to rallies now, write letters, and spend time on hold at my rep's officee.

And BTW (probably on a few folks here will understand this), I was born and raised in the Philly area. Grew up in NJ eating cheesesteaks, TastyKakes, the world's best soft pretzels, and graduated from (then) Glassboro State. But then I moved to Chicago, and married a man who's last name was (wait for it) Mummer. Go figure.

Sounds like a wise decision. A friend of mine in Illinois who is a dentist just did the same thing. He thought about it for a long time. He felt, as you do, that the orange mange is going to do serious damage fairly soon and he wanted some security. He was 60 when it sold, he has a deal for 10 years of work if he wants it. He could not afford to upgrade his office the way he knew he needed to. He said there are pluses and minuses to this arrangement, but he doesn't regret it one bit. He said a week after the deal was done a wind storm did serious damage to his office. He said he was home with a cocktail, no worries.

and made a shrewd decision regarding my retirement. I moved from California to New Mexico. Real estate being what it is I was able to sell my condo in the Bay Area and use the money to pay off all my bills (remaining mortgage, equity loans, credit cards, car payments, etc.) and bought a nicer condo outright in Santa Fe. Since I have zero debt now I can live comfortably on a small pension and my Social Security.

If I had stayed in California I would still be working and having to look for someone to move into my extra bedroom to get paid some rent. I would be struggling to live in an economy that has gone insane in California.

So congratulations on being calculating and smart! May you find your new life as comfortable and stable and stress free as I have!

now to engage in gratifying pursuits, offering your talents to those in need, and really at this point, whatever you like. Do make sure to begin enjoying your semi-retirement while your body is still strong and able. Too many wait too long. Just one life my friend - just one.

Best wishes.

I'm new as a poster to DU, but have enjoyed reading the posts here for many months. I can see why you consider it family. I like communicating with like-minded individuals. I'm a member of another political forum that has the full spectrum of political leanings, and it can get pretty knock-down/drag-out over there. It's a big relief to come here and agree with most of what's being said.

Good luck in your future work as an employee....

My husband and I stepped out about 2 years ago and didn't look back. Our only regret is we didn't unload our house sooner and now the property is sitting on the market like a forgotten orphan. Family obligations (caring for my mother-in-law) precluded an earlier sell date so if we have to sit here a few more years so be it. Oddly enough, our plan is to move back to the Philly area, closer to family and friends.

It sounds as if you thought the process through and the fact you can still practice is the best of all worlds.

Good luck. But somehow I don't think you'll need it!

Our dentist (and good friend) just retired this year for much the same reasons you state.
Same age as you.

The pediatric practice at which I have been a nurse practitioner for the last 23 years of my 43 year career is part of an 11 practice consortium that banded together to avoid being bought by a hospital corporation. This happened 6 years ago. We were assured that this would allow us to maintain our individuality - we wouldn't have some impersonal giant conglomerate telling us how to run our practices. Sounded good.

This has turned out to be a complete crock. The board of the consortium has decided that each practice needs to do things all the same way. There is now a huge focus on billing, and following insurance company dictates so we can earn bonuses if optional immunizations are before a certain age, even though there is no particular clinical benefit to the kids to do so. This stuff offends the hell out of me. Add on the extra 2-3 hours a night I spend, on my own time, completing electronic charting that I cannot get done during the office hours, and the job isn't much fun anymore.

I'm 68 now, and planning to retire by 70. Some days, I'm not sure I'm going to last that long. Thank goodness I only work 2 days a week.

I'll miss seeing newborns once I retire, but not much else.

Tip of the hat to you for finding a good path -

Thank you for that clear, passionate, understandable warning. I'm glad you can protect yourself!

Me? My partner died in March. I was hoping to move his 401K in to more stable funds to protect it's value. I think we're in for a crash before that happens. Closing an estate is complicated. But, timing is everything. I don't know if I can save his 401K before bad times. I have a house, some money, a pretty solid promise for a pension (never say never). I think I'll be OK. But if not, If this is the world that we want---a world run by self-centered narcissists (Trump and pals, not anyone here on the DU), I'm OK with saying, "Thanks for the good times. Goodbye." But right now I'm "I think it's going to be bad, but I'm going to make it AND I'm going to help when and where I can."

We have to vote for our Democratic nominee, whoever she is? (Team Harris here)-----Go democrats!----of either sex.
