The Trump administration has just urged the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that firing an employee simply because they are gay is perfectly legal. The request comes in the form of a 34-page amicus brief, which was not required, but voluntary.

The brief, signed by Trump Solicitor General Noel Francisco, tells the Court it is the opinion of the administration’s Dept. of Justice that a “plain text” reading of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 do9es not protect gay people in the workplace from discrimination, including firing for being gay, as The Washington Blade, which was first to report, notes.

“The question here is not whether Title VII should forbid employment discrimination because of sexual orientation, but whether it already does,” the brief says. “The statute’s plain text makes clear that it does not; discrimination because of ‘sex’ forbids treating members of one sex worse than similarly situated members of the other — and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, standing alone, does not result in such treatment.”

President Trump has also stated he will not sign the Equality Act, which would specify that the Civil Rights of Act of 1964 does protect LGBTQ people from discrimination...

1. Not that it's not good to be reminded ... but this story actually came out on Monday ...

Of course, we're very busy endlessly debating the latest horrific Biden/Harris/Bernie/Squad gaffe here on DU, so actual important stories tend to pass without too much notice, generally.

7. I think Log Cabiners are mostly well-off and selfish.

Since this sort of thing doesn't affect most of them directly, they'll probably ignore it. As long as they get their tax cuts, they probably won't say anything about it, or at least they won't make much of a fuss. I went out with a Log Cabiner briefly, back in the 90's, when I was young and dumb. I ended it when I realized I didn't really have any respect for him.

10. They all ready endorsewd trump

That won't change
They'll parrot the admin line, claiming it doesn't and it has no bearing on what the administration really believes
Hell, they argued that Sessions wasn't really anti-gay

3. THIS comes from the so-called President of the United States,

spewing his hatred and discrimination while being supported by the majority of rethuglicons.

4. Why is he such a hateful bastard?

It does appear that cruelty is his M.O. Causing pain to anyone who is not a rich, white, straight (raping, child molesting) christian, old white male seems to be what he lives for. He does not have one ounce of empathy or compassion for anybody else.

5. I suspect that Trump and his little helpers decided that

giving Bible-waving bigots and frustrated sexual harassers the “right” to fire gays would be a sweet little bon-bon to throw to the Religious Right.

Doubtless more than a few asexuals and chaste-by-choice Believers will also get fired by harassers for “being gay” (i.e. not giving in to their harassers’ sexual advances), but the Religious Righties giving Donnie their signed blank checks will think that a little collateral damage is OK when “doing Gawd’s work.”

8. He knows that he would be fucked without his base, so he caters to them.

If they were cannibals, he would give them all free cauldrons and spices. I don't think he really gives a shit about anyone else besides himself.

9. A slippery slope

This is a slippery slope indeed that we're standing on, and human rights long fought for are being worked against and efforts made to walk them backwards by this administration and its far-right backers...
