Youre wishing for property damage, fear, deaths of critters of all kinds, and god forbid, people.

(268,724 posts)1/2lb salt fish
1lb Irish potatoes
2oz breadcrumbs (buy 1/2lb)
one beaten egg
i/2 carrot grated
black pepper,
Soak salt fish in cold water for at least four hours
flake and chop as fine as possible with the onion

Down the way where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Down the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear
'Akey' rice, salt fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time of year
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Sounds of laughter everywhere
And the dancing girls sway to and fro
I must declare my heart is there
Though I've been from Maine to Mexico

(29,194 posts)just before it makes landfall in Florida... lets nuke the M'F.
yeah, that's ticket!
The Hurricane will dissipate and only spread fallout over most of Florida. Which will then need to be evacuated so we don't have to do that again in 20 years just before it sinks under the ocean anyway.
There, two birds with one nuclear stone... stable genius!

Can be indispensable when the power goes out/cell service drops or if your family evacuates in more than one vehicle (which I do not recommend if you can avoid it).
Used such after Ike, and while driving in tandem to my SO for the 8 hour long, 50 mile trek before Rita. We got separated by a couple miles for some of those hours, but could communicate despite the pegged cell service.
Keep your wits, prepare, do things methodically, know the evacuation plan, and do not panic evacuate like we did for Rita. I'll be in contact with a good friend in Florida, will share his takes on the situation later today/tomorrow. He's, eh, seasoned in dealing with FL hurricanes.
Best wishes for y'all, hang in there, and stay safe.

(4,980 posts)Oh shucks, my bad. I left off other obvious things like generators, satellite phones, and water wings.
jmbar2
(4,865 posts)I was in Houston for Hurricanes Rita and Ike when we lost electricity for several days. All of my neighbors cranked up generators and the fumes filled neighboring houses whose windows were open because of the heat. Nearly got gassed by them.
Mersky
(4,980 posts)We've generally gotten by without generators, by heading to higher ground, or used a jump box/inverter. Had to run equipment and generators out to folks in worse hit areas like Friendswood after Ike. Streets were a mess with trees and loud with generators - certainly fumes are a concern.
Really just wanted to mention the walkie talkies. Cell service was over taxed on routes out of Houston before Rita. And was inconsistent after Ike - loaned out a set of two ways so they could run errands and stay connected.
Sooo, now's the time to dust them off, charge, and test them. Or pick some up while gathering supplies. I just like having a set for hurricanes.
jmbar2
(4,865 posts)...along with 12v minifridge and a fan.
Learned that many of the neighbors were using the generators to keep freezers full of meat running. After about the third day with no electricity, we had a block party BBQ and everyone cooked the meat. Kind of silly to poison your neighbors over meat when you could share instead.
Mersky
(4,980 posts)I've stared down 12V setups in the past. Will look at them again. I think it really depends on the amount of time with power out as to whether a generator is necessary. Am in Austin these days, so I'm more like backup support for people in the Houston area.
And, yeah, the BBQ can be one of the bright spots in the mess of it.
Actually, have a portable flip out solar panel that I need to become more familiar with.
Pacifist Patriot
(24,653 posts)But not feeling much in the way of concern - probably jaded. I've lived in Brevard County for 25 years. I've lost count of the hurricanes projected several days out to potentially hit us only to move away as they get closer. I've evacuated from a number of storms and hunkered down under a few others.
I don't live where a storm surge would have any impact. I have a new roof (thanks Irma!) and hurricane shutters. I buy the water, batteries, non-perishable food, etc. right as school lets out in late May. I've got house prep down to a science.
Floridians:
"Waiting for a hurricane is like getting stalked by a turtle."
"This is like waiting for your dad to get home from work to whoop your ass...and the weatherman is like your mom threatening that he will or might not."

(268,724 posts)Maybe a little. Call around and ask anyway, even if they say no you're not worse off. And if you have seniors or disabled people, if you have a service coordinator like one of the council's on aging, they may be willing to help with supplies.

I got some food items I wish I'd had last time (mini-moos for coffee and shelf-stable almond milk). Plenty of water. Storing up ice to keep food cold. I have my pour-over coffeepot at the ready. Gas stove, so I can keep cooking. It might get hot here but hopefully we'll be okay.

(43,155 posts)....meaning it has more time to build up steam.
In recent times these storms intensify in a few hours.
One of the factors experts were considering was whether Dorian would be weakened by the mountains in DR - well Dorian decided to miss them completely and veered NE which is bad news for Florida. No one expected Dorian to reach the Virgin islands.

(14,565 posts)I'm in Miami. The official plot has it making landfall somewhere near Melbourne. But the sharpest guys on the tracking forums have been insisting for 2 days that the path will be considerably further westward, based on the most reliable European models.
Along those lines here is a recent tweet. The weakest models show the northern path while the ones typically more accurate have Dorian cutting a swatch across South Florida and then entering the Gulf::

(11,949 posts)And get plenty of gas and oil for your chainsaw if you own one. And as much cash as seems prudent.
And most importantly, check on your elderly and disabled neighbors. They may need help but are often reluctant to ask. If you have propane cooking stations host dinners with stuff from everyones freezers. After Charlie we had some great communal meals in my old neighborhood.
If you still have power and space ask those without to stay with you. We already have one person living alone planning to stay here if it hits central Florida. Hurricanes suck but can bring out the best in people.

(268,724 posts)The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. This scale estimates potential property damage. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures. In the western North Pacific, the term "super typhoon" is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.
