I am right in the path of the eye as of the 11am update!! I was going to hunker down but I am responsible for 4 fur babies so I am heading into work with them on Sunday. Thankfully I work a veterinary hospital that is new and rated for a CAT 5 hurricane and we have a generator. Me and the owners and couple of other employees will take care of the close to 100 boarders that going to be there for the storm. We will make sure they get their meds and food and are walked and cleaned up after. We will even lay with them and hold them if they are scared. I guess that is why I got into this career 15 years ago- to take care of those that can't take care of themselves. We are hoping for the best for our close knit community. Anyone in Florida preparing for this take care and be safe. This is a bitch of a storm and not knowing where it heading yet is just stressful -just be prepared. Homes and items in them can be replaced- you and your pets can not!!
I'll post pictures as it progresses and its safe enough!!

(27,489 posts)For over a week we'll have had Dorian on our radar before we even begin to feel the effects of the storm. Yes it's good to have lead time to prepare, but each day your anxiety builds. I would put floods in this category as well. For days you hear the rivers are going to rise. You do the best you can to prepare and evacuate if necessary.
Earthquakes and tornados are no less devastating, but rarely are you aware of the impending disaster. They just happen with little or no warning. You're left with the event and the clean up after. You buckle down and tackle the cleanup. But hurricanes extract every bit of anxiety out of you before they hit. And if you end up directly in the path, you too are left with the aftermath but completely worn out mentally.
Not saying I would rather an earthquake or tornado, just saying the toll it takes on your sanity is altogether different.

(120 posts)The grounds are already saturated from the all summer storms- a basic thunderstorm causes flooding in certain ares. There is no place for the rain to go and now this!!

(1,107 posts)Back in 2015 when we had our very own Megafire in north central WA it was a lot like what you're describing. Monitoring the weather every 15 minutes wondering what path the fire was going to take. Were several fires going to come together to form a complex and then what was that going to do. How were these huge fires going to generate their own local weather and how was that going to affect regional patterns, oh yeah unfortunately I can feel your pain.
We have a number of people who are still dealing with mental health issues that developed during that summer of fire. All I can say to all of you in the path of this thing is "Let's be careful out there"

(40,748 posts)Or do you have a 2nd floor in case the ground floor gets flooded? I'm not an expert on riding out hurricanes, but it seems to me that seepage/flooding might be a bigger problem than high winds.
Also pets get a little crazy over lightning, thunder and noises from the storm. Good luck and stay safe!
jovibennett
(120 posts)but we are built on slightly higher ground so we won't have flooding there. The winds are the most destructive part especially when it slows down and sits over us

(27 posts)Later National Hurricane Center updates show it likely that almost all the Florida peninsula is likely to get smacked. Baclava is right, though.
And best of luck to our veterinary friend and all in danger there.
(Bad joke: If the facility is rated CAT 5, is bringing four cats there bringing one too few?
[Sorry. Couldn't restrain my ugly impulses.])

(507 posts)of Florida you're in, but hoping your building is at least a few feet above sea level, and more than a few miles away from Atlantic Ocean. It's great that you, your fellow co-workers and your employer are doing what you're doing for the boarded pets. Hopefully, windows are boarded up, there is plenty of food, safe drinking water for all of you, and pets, and all of you inside the building are able to make it through Dorian.
Be safe, when you're able, keep us all posted on your progress. Wishing you luck from West Central Florida (Tampa Bay)

(120 posts)We will be good- we have impact resistance windows which was tested with a limb flying through the air a few months ago during a severe thunderstorm. It cracked but held!!
We are watching it hoping the high pressure holding it down will lift and turn this bitch north!!

(15,719 posts)As the saying goes.. Run from the water and hide from the wind... If your not near the water and it's a well built building you should not have much problem. It's the loss of power during and after that's the bitch.. A generator helps ALOT!! Like all the talking heads say, have enough food and water for a few days for you and the furry ones..

(5,340 posts)Wanted to be sure to get in a thank you for your caring dedication to the fur babies. I don't know what I would have done without the help of veterinarian offices at times.
While sitting in traffic, I saw a young man working road assistance confidently changing the tire of motorists watching from behind the car. As I viewed this in hundred degree weather, I thought of your post.
So, with that in mind, thank you to everyone working to keep things going thru hard realities.

(20,202 posts)Historically a majority of hurricanes with these same conditions take a turn northward into the Carolinas. It looks like this one may follow those historical patterns. The forecast is favorable for Dorian to skirt Florida and make landfall in the Carolinas as a weaker storm now. Good news for you, bad for the Carolinas.
At any rate, stay safe and don't worry about putting yourself in harm's way just for pictures to post. Your safety is worth far more than a few pictures, and those furry dependents of yours need you greatly. Whatever Dorian's path, stay safe and healthy.
