(4,919 posts)I follow her on Twitter, and she seems to be a very vocal (and welcome) critic of other "journalists" these days. I think she's freelancing and allowed to speak her mind by not being affiliated with any media outlet.

(34,189 posts)In June 2013, O'Brien formed the production and distribution company, Starfish Media Group.[29][30] Starfish Media Group signed a deal to produce a series of hour-long documentary specials for Al Jazeera America.[31]
In September 2016, O'Brien became a host of the Hearst Television show, Matter of Fact with Soledad O'Brien, which is produced by Starfish Media Group; in addition to its broadcast availability, it is carried by A&E on Sunday mornings (a network Hearst partly owns).[32]
Other work
From 2013 to 2016, O'Brien was moderator of National Geographic Bee, replacing Alex Trebek who moderated for 25-plus years.[33]
In 2014, O'Brien co-taught a Harvard University Graduate School of Education class with Professor Joe Blatt on "Advancing the Public Understanding of Education."[24]
On May 1, 2016, O'Brien hosted PBS NewsHour Weekend, filling in for Alison Stewart.[citation needed]
On January 12, 2016, O'Brien appeared on PBS's TV genealogy program, Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s Finding Your Roots. The focus was on O'Brien's Irish ancestry.
In 2016, O'Brien presented the 'I Am Latino in America' tour, with nationwide stops across the United States. The tour was streamed live globally on MOSH.

(9,685 posts)I put something up a while ago about a black author and journalist who talked about this. She is invited on as an anti-racist onto a programme and so they have a racist on for balance...WTF? There is no balance there... she walked. Swore never to do it again.

NO!!!! Sometimes you do NOT need different sides to examine an issue. Especially when one side is complete bullshit.
Theres only room for ONE side: the TRUTH.

(6,212 posts)I doubt trump would have made it to the White House. I stopped watching TV news and pundits during the 2016 campaign because of the ridiculous both sides policies and having someone like Santorum or McEnany spewing their lies. Good for Matthew Dowd.

(317,722 posts)watched and read any m$$$media since November 2002.. but I know from DU that it's only exponentially worse now.

(37,431 posts)"The goal of this ministry is to preach the truth, not be impartial to both sides."
For some, "balance = equal time."
For some, "balance = impartial." An equal effort to hear both sides before being judgmental.
Didn't like it back in the '80s, don't like it 30 years after.
Esp. when in the '80s it was clearly a matter of faith, "evidence of things not seen", while in the '10s it's more a matter of supposed veridicality, "my truth" instead of "the truth" with a push for the two to necessarily be identical: "My truth must be the truth, your truth? Well, sod off."

(11,767 posts)There was a time when the news was "mainstream" and everyone basically got the same story so that people from the different perspectives could discuss the interpretation, but since the emergence of a consolidated right wing media ecosystem, a whole segment of the population either hears nothing or hears significant spin about the shared reality. Case in point, Donald Trump. How anyone can believe that he has done anything good for the country is beyond me but if you are hearing what a terrific job he is doing and how the "liberal media" and "fake news" is trying to tear him down, then you are pretty much inoculated from getting any actual facts and trusting them.
There is always a concern of this happening from the left, but there is NOTHING like a consolidated media ecosystem on the left to sustain it. We have mainstream/corporate media, independent media, left leaning and left wing media (tiny) and the right wing media system consisting of Fox News, Sinclair Broadcasting, and other affiliate sources like Breitbart, NewsMax, Drudge, etc... not to mention the thousands of radio stations that send out Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, and their ilk.
Then they want "balance". It is bull crap. They want total media dominance.

(14,162 posts)Discussion of opposing positions within the boundaries of fact is good. What we have now or what it has morphed into is fact versus the illusion of fact. In logic there is neither premice nor resolution when arguing factual reality against dataless fantacy. It simply becomes a battle of wills where both sides stalemate. The only way to reach a factual conclusion is to eliminate the illusion. There's nothing to balance.
