My response to people who spout that bullshit is, "So are we. We just think we're hot shit because of big brains and opposable thumbs." My cat, Chairman Meow, has more personality (and intelligence) than a lot of the humans I work with, and I'd definitely rather spend time with him. He's not "just an animal."
