General Discussion

I don't want to wear a bulletproof vest every time I go out shopping. Or to a concert Or the movie theater. Or to a restaurant or coffee shop. Or to school
I don't want to learn combat wound training. I don't want to buy bulletproof clothes or backpacks. I don't want desks that can double as a shield. I don't want to go to school in a classroom that resembles something of an underground bunker. I don't want to know that my teachers are packing heat.
I want your fucking weapons out of the god damn streets and out of the hands of lunatics and racists. That is it. There can be no negotiation on this. And if you still support this after all the death and destruction we've witnessed, you're part of the problem.

(23,286 posts)Then we don't have to worry about lunatics and racists.

(2,146 posts)You know... there are racists and lunatics that can radicalize idgits..to commit mass murder with postings on the 'net

(100,102 posts)That's not really a step for free speech but it's definitely a step toward ending radicalization.

Besides that, if you want to yell "fire" in a crowded theatre, how are they going to stop you?

Don't need to say lots of things.

(2,146 posts)I specifically mentioned the " 'net".....do we strip everyone's rights because a tiny fraction misuse it to harm/kill others?

(90,363 posts)Hundreds of millions of guns and the people who would turn them over are the ones you didnt need to worry about anyway.
Anything but simple

(18,770 posts)That said no rational person is talking about taking guns away from everyone.
How do I reconcile that with this? Which post should I believe?

(16,113 posts)solution. Get rid of all the people and gun violence will drop to 0.
A society with no gun violence, no man-made global warming, no sexism, racism or homophobia, no wars, no poverty, no healthcare problems is all possible if only we get rid of all the people.

Maybe they'll use up their supply on pictures of Democrats and discover it's too late to replenish.

Good idea

(16,113 posts)I dont believe theres an effective and legal way to dance around the second amendment to get rid of guns without directly addressing the 2A.

(156 posts)I worry more about some kid T-boning me while texting than I do someone shooting me. Or some jerk that's drunk or high on drugs. I don't own a gun and don't need one but I respect the Constitution. That includes the BoR and all the amendments.

(29,322 posts)I'd rather have Japan's gun laws & a police force that mostly doesn't carry guns.
We made alcohol illegal then legal in the constitution.

There's an ancient proverb: Those that sow the blood, shall reap the bloodbath.
And there are people who will be happy to kill anyone who does try to change it.

(9,457 posts)The gun laws in England, where they have a diverse population in my opinion, result in .04 murders per 100,000 residents from what I've read. The number is 3.6 per 100,000 for "Merica - that's 90 (NINETY) times as many. Are we really that violent or might it be the epidemic of guns, especially handguns in this country? I'm not positive I'm not a genius but I am leaning towards the massive number of firearms being a large part of the problem.
From a synopsis of UK firearm laws/regulations:
Police checks on an individual or organisation wishing to own a firearm involve criminal record checks, as well as interviews and reports from a GP. A permit cannot be granted unless police are satisfied both that the applicant has a good reason to own the firearm and that they do not pose a threat to public safety.
Prohibited weapons, such as handguns, can be authorized by the Home Office on behalf of the Secretary of State in exceptional circumstances.
Doesn't seem draconian to me.

(4,758 posts)I can't look up the exact numbers at the moment but the US non-firearm homicide rate is still something like 7-10x the UK's total rate. The guns are a massive, massive part of the problem, but the short answer is yes, Americans are a uniquely violent people.

(100,102 posts)Or that they're dangerous and can result in death. If you look at every single mass shooting in the last few years, with the exception of Vegas, every mass shooting has been conducted by a young, white, angry male loner. If anything these people who commit such atrocities are driven by hatred - whether they learned it from their parents or not. The biggest problem isn't video games, it's the disconnect from society that is hammered in by male lonliness and the need to feel superior to others.

(10,856 posts)The world avg for homicides per 100,000 is 6.2 per year.
The avg for the continent of America is 16.3 per 100,000
The US avg is 5.3, so we are fairly non-violent compared to the rest of the America's.
