We had duck and cover drills and fire drills.
No comparison in my opinion.
Before I call tomorrow if anyone has any suggestions on questions I would really appreciate it.

(42,641 posts)And that should be the focus. All of these drills are only necessary because the NRA, and Putin, run the GOP.
I can easily see these children suffering from psychological trauma because the NRA/GOP suggests that schools be repurposed as armed prisons.

(28,136 posts)The school is completely fenced off with a volunteer parent at each classroom door.
Even with this they still dump the paranoia on to the children.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)And yes, this will obviously influence the children.

(53,410 posts)There is absolutely no need to have those drills happen spontaneously in order for the children to learn what to do. Absolutely none. They will be better prepared if they learn what to do by knowing its OK.
God! This pisses me off big time! Why are they terrorizing children?! This going to cause PTSD which will only damage them.

(60,010 posts)We can say yeah, no big deal for the nuke drills, now, but we were being prepared for a rare event, at a time when even smart people did not understand much or hear much about nuke bombs.

Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)as someone who was pre-teen in that era. I was aware of preparing our root cellar as a place to stay in the event nuclear war happened, of my parents purchasing food that they could safely store in the cellar in case we needed to stay there for a while. I was also aware that we were a fraction of a degree off from a SAC base (which would likely be an early hit) - and that if the aim was off we might be a direct hit.
Even at that age, I had seen images from Hiroshima and Nagasaki - and knew the capabilities of nuclear bombs.
You may not have been aware, understood much, or have heard much - but I was - and I did.

There is a way to not terrorize the children.
At least minimize it.

So did my kids-one of which is also now a teacher.
If even one life is saved-it is worth it.
The 2nd day of school we have a run-hide-fight video that is required and then we discuss our specific classrooms with our specific students.
it sucks, but it is necessary.

(28,136 posts)They sprang it on the children.
Did you read my thread?
demtenjeep
(31,997 posts)if kids knew it wasn't real, they wouldn't take it seriously thus in the event it WAS real they wouldn't know what to do.
My kids do NOT know (I am on crisis team) when the drills are-but they do know what to do.

(32,685 posts)How do we get republicans to put their racism aside for an election or two so this country can get back on track? Why can't they see that this isn't sustainable?

(63,221 posts)The least they could do is give the kids a head's up so they don't panic unnecessarily. That's just cruel.

Btw-did you know there is now a Grandparents Demand Action? You might check your local Moms Demand Action for details. They're working on either a Hunters or Gun Owners Demand Action group too.

I'm a proud member here in Missouri. We took on our lawmakers last session over a bill that would allow guns on all college campuses. We were there every day of the hearing, made phone calls, showed up at outside events where the politicians were, etc. We defeated that bill.
Btw-don't need to be a mom to join. Some of our strongest members are grandparents, teachers, aunts/uncles,etc.

(28,787 posts)our kids go to learn and should not be going through. At my granddaughter's school (5th grade, maybe even 6th), some genius decided that the children would not be told it was a drill. One of her classmates peed his pants. I doubt he'll ever get over it.

(11,591 posts)I don't understand the thinking that springing it on them helps them learn. How can they learn when they're being scared shitless and without any guidance?
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)To teach children what to do - AND - to ensure that the plan they have can be carried out in the time they would be expected to have to do so. The former can be done with a warning - the latter cannot. Whether the spaces are adequate, the children understand the directions well enough to carry them out when they are nervous, whether people can assume whatver position they need to be in without advance warning, etc. can only be tested when the drill comes without warning.
I've been in education most of my life - and drills (of all sorts) are rarely announced. At most, we are warned there will be a (fire, tornado, active shooter) drill during the coming week.

(28,136 posts)The elementary school is secure.
An unclimbable fence around the entire school plus a parent volunteer outside every classroom door.
Active shooter drills are scaring kids and may not protect them.
Some schools are taking a new approach.
From calling them "buddy room drills" to making school psychologists available during the exercises, schools are trying to protect students physically and mentally.
