Is anyone watching this trainwreck?
Why is the audience in stitches laughing? Everything he is saying is deadly serious and I do not find it one goddamn bit funny or laughable
This is the reason we are where we are, everyone thinks this whole thing is a joke. Time to get serious people and stop thinking it's Saturday night live time.

(8,661 posts)However, I have been enjoying his shows when he has a live audience. People are so freaked out about Trump - maybe it comes down to laugh or cry.

(3,595 posts)It was kinda funny. Hey, it's Friday night and we're stuck in this nightmare for at least another 16+ months, and Sharpiegate going full tilt, so I can't begrudge people looking for a reason to laugh. A pressure valve, if you will.

(115,587 posts)Talking about how Boris Johnson and Brexit might be an even bigger disaster than Trump because Britain has no way out; Brexit is forever. Hasan said something like, When the US complains about how terrible Trump is, Britain says "Hold my beer!"

(102,119 posts)I heard a bit of it tonight. He's done it apparently a few times--only on Fridays.

(4,919 posts)Just my opinion... But, I like that he's mixing it up a little, all the MSNBC shows repeat the same stories in the same block format. This format is more of an "explainer" with a live autidence. And as a bonus: Trump hates to be laughed at more than anything.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,587 posts)And it's not all jokes. He and his guests said some pretty funny stuff about Trump and Boris Johnson but they are talking about serious stuff and making some great points. I was just thinking about how this is a really good format and he should keep doing it.

(13,870 posts)It smacks of stand up ironic humor. The problem it has grave consequences. The jester could always make fun of the king and not have too many repercussions.. It reminds me of the 1/2 hour of commentary that Kimmel/Colbert/Meyers and the other guy at the beginning of their shows.. It's educational too. I had to laugh when he said he tried to understand brexit and failed...... ME TOO! When he explained about the emergency brake and the representational democracy vs true democracy it all made sense... I like the way he segued into the tool we have that is impeachment that the brits don't..... or a constitution
good stuff..

(51,567 posts)I was wondering why they were laughing too. It seemed like Chris was trying to discourage the laughter. I found it irritating and wondered what the fuck was so funny?!? I guess they will be rolling in the isles now that gun violence is the next subject.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,587 posts)But he was doing it in a way that reinforced his points. Things can be funny and serious at the same time.

(9,944 posts)... did not care for it... but I do like Bill Nye and David Hogg. I think they are both great at communicating to a specific audience.

(4,979 posts)I don't find him insincere. Jabs of truth elicit thought, and I'm fine with that. Sometimes, I have to laugh to get through something hard, and onto actionable knowledge. I don't have to agree with everything in a presentation to get something out of it.
Didn't really strike me as stand up, but to each their own.
I think the David Hogg segment is profound. I'll be sure to rewatch it with my inner circle.

(24,362 posts)The shit from this administration piles up so fast, so deep and so high, no one can keep up! I'm well far past outraged on this journey, such that I've seen the sun rise and set 50 fucking times! (an analogy to overseas travel on flights and trips so long, you see the sun set and rise multiple times, in case you don't get it)
What the hell else is there to do but laugh?
If you don't, you'll make yourself crazy.
You have to laugh at this shitshow. You just have to. Outrage isn't doing a fucking thing.
Chellee
(2,091 posts)said that keeping up with the scandals and outrages is like trying to catch confetti. I thought that was a brilliant analogy.

(53,410 posts)Laughter is a profound thing that has many uses, especially when things get very bad. Humor is a way to stay sane. To keep from going crazy with impotent rage. To stave off depression and sadness that is too difficult to bear. Its especially therapeutic when things feel close to despair.
I know this from personal experience. The human body and mind cannot function in perpetual fight or flight mode. Laughter is probably as much a life saver as anything else you can do. It sounds callous to an observer, but it isnt. Its an effective way to stay grounded within.

(18,486 posts)I don't think people should deliver the news or commentary while walking around a stage in front of a cheering, clapping studio audience.
As I said before, it reminds me of "Network." And it creeps me out.
