Damn. First Eddie Money, and now Ric Ocasek.
Ric Ocasek, lead singer of The Cars, died Sunday in his Manhattan home, an NYPD spokesperson said.
He lived on East 19th Street.
Ocasek was found unconscious and unresponsive in bed around 4 p.m., police said. Emergency medical services pronounced him deceased at the scene.

(72,505 posts)I'll never forget the first time I saw The Cars perform; it was on SNL.
IIRC, they sang "You Might Think", or maybe it was "Magic". Either one. I remember, at the end of the song, Ocasek, this scowling, scarecrow-like guy, broke into a warm happy smile. It transformed his face. I understood later what Paulina Porizskova must have seen in him.
It's sad that he's gone. My heart always aches when I listen to Ben Orr singing "Drive"; now it will ache even more when I listen to The Cars.

(8,547 posts)At the World Series of Rock, I saw Fleetwood Mac, Todd Rundgren with Utopia, Bob Welch, The Cars and Eddie Money.
Now three are gone, I'm getting too old.

(72,505 posts)But I can't count how many of his songs sound like something Buddy Holly might have written and sang if he hadn't died so young.
Anyone else hear Holly in songs like "Just What I Needed" or "My Best Friend's Girl"?

(7,851 posts)I was tired of disco and was never really into metal. To this day I still listen to the Cars.
