(23,714 posts)honestly, it is not worth it to quit. too much valuable info and insight here, plus it helps to blow off steam with like minded people.
but you should stay off the primary board. i rarely post there. honestly it is just the same circular firing squad arguments over and over. 90% of the juries i sit on are for primary posts about Bernie Sanders. Exactly the same as 2016. It honestly drives me mad. That forum brings very little to DU other than strife it does serve a great purpose of consolidating all our infighting to one board instead of it spreading all over DU LOL

(506 posts)How can you take such authoritarian horseshit seriously. Hides are dispensed automatically on any complaint with no review. Appeals are ignored. The appellant receives no response unless the appeal is approved, and so has to wait forever for nothing at all. It's a stupid system that favors the capricious complainer. Are any appeals ever approved? Who fucking knows..

(106,202 posts)I was a mod on DU2; I'm a mod on another forum. Those were/are inevitably more 'authoritarian' because certain users get the authority to delete or edit posts, and don't have to explain it in public. I don't think you appreciate the level of democracy and member power that DU3 gives us.
And yes, appeals do get approved.
Seriously, if you think this is a "stupid system", then make your own forum without any rules at all. It'll devolve into 8chan in no time at all.

(110,260 posts)Her facts aren't "off" about her own experience.
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/guillain-barre-syndrome.html
In 1976, there was a small increased risk of GBS after swine flu vaccination, which was a special flu vaccine for a potential pandemic strain of flu virus. The National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as Institute of Medicine, conducted a scientific review of this issue in 2003 and found that people who received the 1976 swine flu vaccine had an increased risk for developing GBS. The increased risk was approximately one additional case of GBS for every 100,000 people who got the swine flu vaccine. Scientists have several theories about the cause, but the exact reason for this link remains unknown.
pnwmom
(110,260 posts)when I had just gotten the shot for the Swine Flu, and a few days later the reports came out about a rash of GB connected to the vaccine. That was scary.

(12,046 posts)As many jury calls as everyone gets daily just in the short time we're here especially during primary season and I'm sure a large majority of those who get hidden feel they were somehow misinterpreted or judged too harshly and appeal. I suspect if they answered every appeal it would take someone all day explaining themselves in emails. Maybe they could have a team like MIRT, or maybe it just is what it is sometimes imperfect but the most democratic system I'm aware of in such a community.
samplegirl
(13,984 posts)especially considering my ordeal of having Guillain Barre
from the swine flu shot left me on life support for months in a paralyzed state. Ive been speechless before but never will anyone shut me up about my opinions of the risks of the flu shot even though Im not an anti-vaccine person.
TwilightZone
(28,836 posts)I'm sorry that you were that one, but there's no evidence that getting GB from the flu shot is anything other than an infinitesimal risk. The chances of getting it from a bacterium or other infection is thousands of times higher.
That's probably why your post was considered anti-vax. Your experience, while truly horrifying, isn't representative of the norm and GB is *not* a risk associated with the shot often enough to require them to advertise it as such.
Source: the CDC
"If there is an increased risk of GBS following flu vaccination it is small, on the order of one to two additional GBS cases per million doses of flu vaccine administered."

(10,988 posts)So if 165 flu shots are given a yr possibly 300 or more people might get GB from flu shot. Most adverse reactions reported to Vaccine Injury Compensation Program are now from flu shots, not childhood vaccines. SIRVA seems to be a problem - where the shot is given too high on the arm and the pain becomes chronic. Because of SIRVA, I think if I were to get a flu shot I would get it from a dr rather than a pharmacy.
Here is a report from Dept of Justice - put out every 3 months detailing injury compensation. 83 compensations - 18 compensations for SIRVA, 6 for GBS. (chart on page 10)

(56,198 posts)it isn't anything to be overly bothered by.
I very much doubt your original post would have been alerted had you included your gbs story, and then the second post wouldn't have even come up.
Your experience with gbs is informative and adds to the du community to know about it, thank you for sharing.
Don't let the particulars of how it was communicated and misinterpreted bother you. It happens, it's no big deal.
Again, I know it doesn't feel that way right now -- I've been there -- but after a bit of reflection I hope you'll take it in stride as I have the rare times my posts get removed.

(6,831 posts)I got slapped for something because one NEW person reported my comment as a threat. It wasn't. It was a summary of a reality, something that I have seen happen several times in my lifetime, and it was completely and ridiculously misinterpreted.
I think sometimes people knee-jerk a response without thinking that there could be more than one interpretation than their own.
It upset me for days. So, I took a few weeks off. But the important thing is your sanity in these difficult times, so do what you feel is best for you.
Peace be with you.

(11,949 posts)Listen, I love DU. It fun to bullshit with people who generally agree with me. And I learn a lot and get tons of laughs.
But it has zero effect on my real life. I get hides. Usually because I can be an ass. Occasionally because I am misunderstood.
But how does that effect my, or your life? Yeah, it doesnt. Or should not.
If what happens here is affecting you emotionally then you should give it a break. Then come back when when you realize what it is. A bunch of strangers with various views generally on the left. Some nice. Some assholes.
But at the end of the day if what happens here affects you emotionally you need something else.

(25,586 posts)Ive gotten lots of hides, some justified and others less so. I appeal the ones I feel are unfair and theyre often overturned. I dont get worked up about the ones that stand, and if I get to three (usually related to a certain fan club, but cest la vie) I just make sure to be extra careful for a month or two until they start to mature off my record.
Its an internet discussion board taking it seriously is very ill-advised.

(31,261 posts)I got really angry when one person seemed to alert stalk me over one night about 2 months ago. I appealed, but heard nothing back. I was angry, so I just took some time away. I got kicked off, literally banned from websleuths. It was a tech thing. I thought my computer was acting up and posts not going through so kept posting and...nasty message too on doubling posts and you were warned, never darken our very special door again.
That same weekend I had found out a friend had committed suicide and also had to put my very precious little rescue to sleep. I was crying over websleuths LOL. But someone on board messaged me how much she liked my posts and others did too and I told her about my friend and cried some more. And bit by bit got over it.
