Just how far will Republicans let Donald Trump go?
09/23/19 10:10 AM
By Steve Benen

To overlook Donald Trump’s latest scandal is to let blind partisan loyalty override any sense of judgment and propriety. There are some elements of the controversy that still need to come into focus, but the available evidence already paints an ugly picture – featuring a president who appeared to have abused his power and pressed a foreign government to intervene on his behalf in an American election. There are related questions about possible extortion.

In Democratic circles, the volume on the impeachment knob is approaching 11, but what about Republicans? It’s safe to say they’ve been quite a bit more reticent.

snip//

Trump will go as far as his party will allow him to go, and if recent history is any guide, congressional Republicans are generally prepared to let the president do as he pleases.

It’s likely we’ll see this latest scandal unfold in the same way. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) appeared on Fox News on Friday, conceding he doesn’t know “the actual facts,” but nevertheless telling viewers he sees the controversy as a “deep state” conspiracy.

A few hours later, The Atlantic’s Ron Brownstein added, “Every time Trump breaks a window, Republicans in Congress obediently sweep up the glass.”

The consequences of such obedience for our system of government are staggering.

since he is their only hope to holding power. They will back him no matter what he does. Sadly, so will some Democrats.

"Impeachment is off the table"

"So I think the strategy of getting as much of the facts out and then months down the road making a decision on impeachment”

“A president should be indicted, if he’s committed a wrongdoing — any president,” (The Constitution calls for impeachment, this is buck passing".

“We’ve got to get beyond this ‘impeachment is the answer to every problem. It’s not realistic. If that’s how we are identified in Congress, as the impeachment Congress, we run the risk that people will feel we’re ignoring the issues that means a lot to them as families.”

Stalling, stalling, and more stalling. There is no requirement for a vote on opening impeachment proceedings, only on actual articles of impeachment.

You can type in the names of various Democratic leaders and "impeachment" and you will read all of the excuses they have given for not impeaching, despite the overwhelming evidence of criminal misconduct, up to and including, actual admission of law breaking by Trump.

You want to argue with me about evidence that has been in the news almost every day since Trump took office. Why? My view is the same as Warren's and AOC's. To continue to refuse impeach is to be complicit.

They have that power. The Speaker of the house and other leaders can declare their support for impeachment, which gives cover for Dems to fall in line behind her. Or they can continue to tell us "impeachment is off the table" and make vague statements about what they might do in the future, stalling until the election, when they will then claim that it is not fair/pragmatic to impeach right before the election.

Trump committed impeachable offenses before he even took office, but they have failed to act. They have delayed, delayed and delayed. The window to act is closing.

They can bring articles all day but ultimately it won’t have any effect on him. It dies in the senate and he says “See” no conviction and he is on to the next thing. Alternatively we continue to pressure him by investigating everything like we have been because....... That actually is their job, and it will have a measurable effect come voting day.

All of the GOP has to go on record approving his criminal activity. I don't think that will help them in the 2020 election. Also, an active impeachment hearing will drive Trump over the edge to the point that all he does is rant and gibber.

Or we can just let it go, and his Russian allies rig the next election.

The GOP is on record of approving of his criminal activity. For the last 3 years.

I think we are going to get an impeachment I just hope that when we do it we get everything out of it that we can. It is pretty easy to jump on the "We must do it right now" boat. I just don't see why doing it right now is so important when we can get much more out of it.

What all trump has done, and is letting it play out knowing he'll either resign, or be forced out from everything they have on him and his family. Pence will be forced out to by getting a deal to stay out of prison.Nancy is ahead of everyone else and knows she's going to win this fight.

The GOP wants absolute power. To get it, they will put up with any belligerent jackass as long as he says what they want to hear and bonus points if he trashes their opponents. And then when he's no longer needed, they will cast him aside for someone even more horrible. Wash, rinse, repeat.
