Let's send a message folks. Most of our reps are going to pressure for Impeachment in the next few days. Let them know we have their backs!

Because we have GOT TO send a notice through the history books - to EVERY doggone future president who will ever walk the earth:
You DO NOT get to do this.
You are NOT some royally-entitled crowned head.
You are NOT infallible like some pope.
You are NOT a ruler by some Divine Right.
And you ARE NOT and WILL NEVER BE above the law.
The LAW is king. NOT you.

(2,061 posts)I would like to think that means they know a lot more. I'm very happy with what the House Democrats have been doing. Some of the more centrist members have become accepting to impeachment recently. That alone tells me the optics and tactics are working. I really feel that much of what we are seeing is a bunch of people trying to determine what the articles will be. I don't think that is as easy of a decision as some might think.
Where I seem to stand apart from a lot of people on this site is that I feel we can get enough Republicans to join us to make a difference if we go with the correct articles and make the case clear. I don't think they will find their moral or ethical compass. I think they are self-serving assholes. Look at the retirements. Look at the polls. Standing by Trump in many counties across the country is a political death sentence for some Republicans and is only getting worse. They are loyal to themselves before all else. The cornerstone of todays Republican.
Yes, I support impeachment. It's why I support the parties current actions. Seems a clear line to impeachment is being drawn. Lets line up the strongest articles and get him on more than obstruction. If national security is the center of the articles then I think he gets removed from office. I would still support impeachment on charges of obstruction alone. He just wouldn't be removed from office.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)though...it's almost too late to turn. If you think about self preservation, they might have been able to overcome a vote against trump a year ago. And a viable replacement who they could prop up and rally around became apparent. Let's just say somehow trump got removed soon. There wouldn't be enough time to find a new 2020 candidate and for the public to forget a yes vote. That assumes no one except Karen thinks Pounce is the one.
TidalWave46
(2,061 posts)I really do think it's just the opposite. Trump is becoming more unstable and is clearly outlining himself as a national security threat. It becomes more and more clear to the public each day. I think the tide is still rising when it comes to the possibility of getting some Republicans on board.
"If you think about self preservation, they might have been able to overcome a vote against trump a year ago. And a viable replacement who they could prop up and rally around became apparent. Let's just say somehow trump got removed soon. There wouldn't be enough time to find a new 2020 candidate and for the public to forget a yes vote."
This means that over the next couple of months they would want to go into 2020 with Trump. With what is going on it could truly set them back even further in every area. I know that many of them want to go forward with Trump but I don't think it's even close to all of them.

(7,673 posts)Repost from yesterday. Bear with me....
Here's the impeachment process in a nutshell, and what happens if we don't get it right.
1. President commits impeachable acts
2. House votes to initiate an impeachment inquiry - an investigation, kind of like Grand Jury
For each impeachable offense, evidence is gathered, analyzed and judged whether it is sufficient to convict. There are no re-dos. You get one shot at it.
- This is occurring now, informally, under Jerry Nadler.
Currently, evidence is still being subpoenaed, gathered and analyzed Deutsche Bank records of money laundering, tax returns, testimony from various witnesses. You don't impeach before you have ironclad evidence.
3. House votes on Resolutions of Impeachment.
- Resolutions of Impeachment specify the criminal charges - the Articles of Impeachment.
- Articles of Impeachment must meet strict constitutional criteria, and convince 2/3 of the Senate to convict.
4. The House votes to Impeach.
- Requires majority vote. Right now, we are still short the votes.
- If they lose the vote, Trump is free to finish destroying democracy for Putin.
5. House appoints and funds "managers" - prosecutors to try the case in the Senate. (Stellar team is in place - they are just waiting for the bat-signal)
- Daniel Goldman (former SDNY deputy chief of organized crime)
- Daniel Noble (former SDNY co chief of complex frauds and cybercrime)
6. President is served with a summons and the Articles of Impeachment.
- They get one shot at this. If they can't persuade the senate to impeach, Trump and the republican criminals have free reign, and ammunition for reelection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Senate Impeachment proceedings
The Senate has the power to conduct a trial of the impeachment.
The Chief Justice presides over the Senate trial and decides on procedures.
The impeachment Trial
1. Both sides present evidence, cross examine witnesses and present closing arguments.
2. At the conclusion of the trial, the Senate goes into closed session to deliberate.
3. The Chief justice calls for a vote
4. 2/3rds vote of the Senate is required to remove the president.
5. If Trump is removed before the 2020 election, Pence becomes president, then runs for reelection in 2020 and 2024.
->THIS IS WHY THE REPUBLICANS WOULD LIKE TO JUMP START IMPEACHMENT - another decade in power.
IOW, beware of people trying to push Nancy and the democrats to jump into impeachment too soon. If they succeed too early, we could get a President Pence until 2028. It's a trap. Don't go there.
We have to both win the case AND the election. Nancy knows this. That's why she is being so cautious.

But presumming no impeachment, there's no guarantee we win the Senate, Presidency or even keep the House in 2020.
And can ANYONE tell me what the House has actually accomplished? I know they've passed a lot of things but haven't the "important ones" been killed in the Turtle-arium or vetoed by the asshole in charge?
And if the Senate stays Red in 2020 and the House stays blue, even a Democratic President and House wiil be able to do little.

The legal and moral justifications of the impeachment of Donald Chump are totally lost on the Repukes, they will never agree with us. We can wait until Doomsday and they'll never see it. That's why I believe we Dems have to go it alone. The consensus will never be there.
We must hope that some of the more moderate, sensible members of the GOP will finally "see the light" but that won't happen until the impeachment train has already left the station. In the end, it's up to us Democrats to save this country. I believe Nancy Pelosi is following the impeachment path, but she's being way too careful. We've reached the point of no return.

Take out every single person in on that, take out every single crooked judge, every single crooked senator, every single crooked rep. Most important, cut the head off the hydra, and then the rest. (14,237 posts)based on his violations of Title of Nobility Clause of the Constitution. (emoluments) But, I was all in on impeachment after that interview was aired and Trump announced on national TV that he fired the Director of the FBI because of "the Russia thing". That was a blatant act of obstruction of justice. Robert Mueller outlined nine other instances of obstruction by Trump. These have been public knowledge since April of last year.
It only took the House of Representatives six months after Nixon refused to hand over the subpoenaed Oval Office tapes (obstruction) before a resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against him was passed.
The current Democratically-controlled House has had the ability to do something about Trump's obstruction (Comey's firing) for almost ten months now, but they have yet to vote on formal proceedings.
It is way past time for them to do their Constitutional duty.

(3,644 posts)Admittedly, I was on the fence about this for a long time. What Trump's done throughout his time in office is one big impeachable offense, but the public at large wasn't in favor of it, and I feared Democrats would suffer the fate of the Republicans in the wake of the Clinton impeachment. That, and conviction in the Senate is all but impossible. Impeachment might have been the moral and legal right thing to do, but it might cause more harm than good. My desire to see justice and my adherence to Realpolitik were more or less evenly opposed.
I've also long appreciated Speaker Pelosi as an incredibly intelligent and shrewd person. If she wasn't openly in favor of impeachment, there had to be a reason.
As of now, I think formal impeachment hearings are imperative. I think we're approaching the point where Democrats may suffer more for doing nothing.

(296 posts)not expressly written but implied as such. Ultimate power rests with people's legislative branch. As to political ramifications, and understandable fears, I can only humbly offer 2 thoughts. 1. yes it's true-a formal IMPEACHMENT INQUIRIY is going to have the result similar to throwing gasoline on a smoldering fire. People will get hurt and burned, including some DEMOCRATS. That said let the flames burn HIGH, BRIGHT AND HOT so as to illuminate the truth once and for all! 2. Let this not be a political move, but rather an American Duty to protect our Country and Preserve The Blessings of Liberty..............for those who doubt, don't want the political risk, I ask you this question.............WHAT ARE THE LAST SIX WORDS OF THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE......IT'S ONLY A HALF DOZEN........WHAT ARE THEY?................respectfully, humbly, goodday

from the WH and Ford became Pres. and was able to pardon Nixon. Will this happen to Trump/Pence?
Far better outcome for Trump to be defeated in 2020, then Pence won't succeed him as Pres. with pardoning power.
