(23,752 posts)Former Speaker Wright told me she was going to be one of the best. He'd known her since she was a teenager from back when her father was in the House.
He probably mentored her come to think of it.
God I miss that man!!! He is probably jumping for joy along with the other great Democratic Speakers and Majority Leaders (not to mention a couple or three Presidents)

(47,940 posts)She waited for the right time.
Imagine if we'd impeached him months ago, as many were screaming at the time. It would be all over. He'd still be President. And that would be the end of impeachment.
We still won't be able to remove him, but now the American people are ready to get rid of him.

(3,459 posts)This path has been frustrating as hell, and I had to keep reminding myself that the wheels of justice turn slowly. But I think now she must have SO much evidence, there will even be some Republicans who will be willing to throw him under the bus if it saves their own hides. 49 Reps and 5 Senators paid the price back in the '74 mid-terms because of their support of Nixon (and just being Republicans) with the conservatives getting hit the hardest. No reason why it can't happen again, and they know it. His supporters are hopeless...he could screw Ivanka on live TV, and they'll figure out a reason to support it, and find a Bible verse to justify it. But that 5-6% who were willing to give him "a chance"? Gone. And he can't do it without them.
I guess it really was being patient, giving him enough rope to hang himself, and sitting back and waiting. But let's hope all this patience pays off.

(9,372 posts)I appreciated this comment on Disqus yesterday, and requested and received permission to quote it in full:
Speaking as a lawyer even on obstruction of justice Democrats don't have the evidence. What they have is a heavily redacted Mueller "Report" that tells them obstruction of justice may have been committed on 10 occasions.
What they need is testimony and/or documents from the witnesses Mueller gathered evidence from OR the grand jury evidence itself.
They've petitioned the court for the grand jury evidence but I'm unaware that a FRCP Rule 6(e) hearing has even been scheduled by the court.
They've so far been blocked in obtaining testimony under oath from witnesses other than Lewandowski the other day. They got some things from him when he was grilled by the consulting lawyer at the end but there again they need other witnesses to corroborate what they got from him.
They also have testimony and evidence from Michael Cohen but again they need grand jury evidence from SDNY to confirm and back up Cohen's assertions.
The same goes for Trump's taxes and financial records which they've won the right to so far from lower courts but are awaiting Appellate Court and possibly Supreme Court ruling.
The problem Democrats and Pelosi have is if the vote on Articles of Impeachment were held now based on the EXPECTATION of obtaining the evidence they need they're fucked if they don't get it.
TomSlick
(13,090 posts)No one is calling for a vote today. What comes next are hearings before House Judiciary. The existence of impeachment hearings helps obtaining evidence and witnesses. I would expect on-going impeachment proceedings to make the court cases move more quickly.
Let's see where we are after hearings are held. Remember, minds were changed during the House Judiciary hearings about Nixon. If after House Judiciary hears the evidence and sees the evidence, then House Judiciary votes. It will be interesting to see if any GOP members vote for impeachment. IF House Judiciary votes any articles of impeachment, then it goes to the House.
I am reasonably confident that if Speaker Pelosi does not have the votes, it will never come up for a vote. (No body is better about counting votes than Speaker Pelosi.)
It remains to be seen if any GOP Senators vote to convict. Remember, there were no GOP Senators supporting Nixon's impeachment until the "smoking gun tape" came out. Let's see how the facts develop.
True Blue American
(18,579 posts)Pelosi knows what she is doing. She waited until they had the facts in hand. She knows so much about Intelligence, having been on the Intelligence committee for 25 years, rest assured she knows everything.
Once Trump crossed the rubicon she was ready to go. Trump thinking he was invincible decided he would do the same thing again.
My hat goes off to Pelosi!

(13,090 posts)With the notes of the conversation between Trump and the Ukrainian President, Trump rather clearly tied the release of the military aid - mind you, OUR money that had been appropriated by the Congress - to digging up something on Biden and his son.
That is not only a high crime or misdemeanor (an archaic term that doesn't necessarily require a crime), it is a violation of federal criminal law. Whether or not the Senate votes to convict, it is a moral imperative that the House must impeach. I cannot predict the political result but sometimes you just have to do the right thing, the political consequences notwithstanding.
We live in perilous times.

(8,251 posts)She knew that impeaching months ago would have guaranteed Senate acquittal. That would have been like throwing away the impeachment opportunity. Trump would have gotten off scot-free, the GOP would have paid little to no price for supporting him, & nothing would have changed. He would have continued to do all the horrible stuff he's been doing. It would not have stopped anything. That would have been a waste of our time & our political capital & made us look like failures.
Her gamble was risky, but it was the right one. She wanted an ironclad case & with a criminal like Trump it was just a matter of time before he handed one to her.

Seriously, there had to be a contingency for every possible way this could go with a back up contingency in place.
From the beginning, I have been absolutely certain that "not on the table" meant 'hasn't been publicly laid out for a vote' not 'No, we aren't going to talk about it so back off'
CaptainTruth
(8,251 posts)As I've said before, in May Pelosi said "when we go through with our case [impeachment] it's got to be ironclad."
She also knows that she needs the votes in the House to pass a resolution.
Both of those conditions have now been met, & so she's moving forward, or going "through with our case," just like she said she would.
And I applaud her for it.

As a (somewhat) side note, if you've not listened to the "Slow Burn" podcast Season 1 discussion of Watergate, it's worth the time. I was just a kid of 8 when it all went down, and remember the gravity of the situation reflected in my parents' discussions, but had no real understanding of what was actually happening. One thing I learned while listening to the podcast that really struck me was how ambivalent everyone seemed to be about Watergate while momentum was building, and how no one was really paying that much attention until EVERYONE was paying attention.
Now the cold, hard light of the operating room has been switched on, and Speaker Pelosi and her fellow Representatives will be sharpening their lancets hopefully to cut out the rot that has infested our country for far too long.

(272 posts)If the Democrats had impeached too early in Donnie's term it would have had little effect on the election and we could have been saddled with Pence. The GOP would have pushed the idea Donnie is a victim of 'left wing radicals' and nothing would have changed at all.
The Democrats have accumulated enough dirt and crimes committed by this mis-administration to prove they gave him a change and the impeachment is not partisan; it is because he broke the law. The nation is suffering from tRump fatigue and if it can be shown that the GOP worked to enable Donnie it could mean the Dems. win huge in 2020.

Last week, impeachment was a dead issue almost but Donald F'ing Trump, that genius of the stable, dug it up from the grave opened his big yap and gave it mouth to mouth to mouth thus resurrecting the instrument of his own destruction.

(2,194 posts)It goes without saying that the impeachment road ahead will probably be the greatest acid test of her political savvy and strategic maneuvering skills to date. Let's all hope and pray that her steady hand and mind may be guided by a Higher Power - America's higher destiny, or whatever you want to call it. We're up against a real bully, trickster and a very dangerous demagogue in the person of Donald Trump, and we need all the help and guidance we can get in these tough times.
Whoever leads our nation after Donald Trump must be strong, and above all, a healer who everyone can trust. If that is Nancy Pelosi, then so be it. If it is Joe Biden, or someone else, then so be it as well. Whoever follows Trump must bring our nation back to political sanity and common sense. American elections for Americans!!!
