(14,909 posts)this is tough. Not because I have trouble apologizing, but because of the implications brought forward in this incident .. and with this issue ..
We are suppose to support and believe the victim -- which we can all agree with in principal .. but then have to acknowledge that it does not always lead to justice (or truth).
And then we have social media -- which certainly can be a great weapon in fighting abuse and injustice -- but also clearly leads to instances of "piling on" and the bandwagon effect. (which has a great deal more in common with mob rule than it does with justice)
I apologize for my part here .. and I hope Newsweek, the author, and the poster of the OP are also aware of the gravity of such a mistake.

(150,503 posts)Sometimes, we discover that the original telling wasn't accurate, so it seems best to wait a bit before reacting as though the story was correct.
The tendency is to believe the victim and, in most case, the victim is telling the truth. But, not always.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WISH) A family has filed a police report after three boys restrained a girl and cut her dreadlocks. The family says the school hasnt done anything about the incident but told the family to pray about it ...

(1,332 posts)It is not a teacher's fault in what kids do onto others. Discipline should be taught and the best teacher could still have a group students do acts like these boys have done. It's how the upbringing of the students that shows how they act. Unfortunately, upbringing in TERMS of wealth, does not hold to be good, but untouchable. Those kids believed they were untouchable. Second Lady or the best teacher of the USA, would still have issues with untouchable children. All this does, shows the school as a bullying class and a Second Lady workplace. Maybe she was involved, but seriously doubt it. It's sad a student was treated as such by his classmates and where are the apologies from those students parents?

(375 posts)What is the defining image in the Washington Posts story on Mitt Romney, as a student at the Cranbrook School, bullying a gay teen-age boy? Maybe its Romney, the eighteen-year-old son of a governor, spotting the student, John Lauber, with, as a classmate remembered, bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and saying, He cant look like that. Thats wrong. Just look at him! Or Romney, a few days later, marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Laubers hair. Or the Posts description of the attack itself:
They came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

Anyone who disagrees with their totally warped since of morality, such that gays are sick people who must be cured of their immorality, is to be not to be tolerated let alone be considered to anything other than damnable. Pence and his brainwashing wife are the corruptors of youth with teachings of intolerance. They are the scum of the earth and the very people Jesus condemned as white washed coffins that were inwardly rotten maggot infested phonies. The only people he condemned were the phony priests who went about putting heavy loads guilt on their fellow mankind.

(2,189 posts)There was a photo in the NYT update page, the link to which I included in my post. The photo showed dreadlocks that were quite uneven, lending credence to the story that bullies had cut them. Now the photo is no longer on that NYT page. That leaves me thinking that something dramatic did happen to the dreadlocks. Witnesses recant for many reasons. I don't see enough information yet to know what's behind the recanting.

Unbelievable
(84 posts)Lots of People believe stories due to sympathy. I usually do. But Sometimes it's due to wanting an outcome.
Lots of White people are terrible. But just because some are, isn't a reason to paint them all. Jussie smollett is another example. Lots of people were mad at every white maga that wearing dude that they saw and now it looks like that whole thing was a lie.
But in the end, what scares me is the people who think of the fact these things didn't happen as some sort of a loss. This is a huge win for humanity. People aren't as bad as we thought. YAY. But we are instant to portray.
I am glad she didn't have to go through what she claimed and I am glad jussie didn't either. But I also feel sorry for the real victims here. The unfortunate thing the accused have in common is their skin color. This might be racism. And racism doesn't defeat racism. Play "shoe on the other foot" and see. We have enough racism in high places to go around for years. Let's try to get rid of it all together.
