By SomervilleTomAs I absorb the events of September 24, 2019, I find the resolution passed by unanimous consent of the Senate most striking. Mitch McConnell is no neophyte, and I see no evidence that he is motivated by anything except a passion to win at all costs. So I find myself wondering what his strategy might be.
I wonder if we are seeing a Hail Mary pass for the 2020 election act quickly and decisively today to remove Donald Trump from office, and run an incumbent Mike Pence against the Democratic nominee in 2020.
Heres why I think this might be happening:
1. Donald Trump polls miserably against the leading Democratic candidates.
2. The House is already Democratic and will likely be more so after 2020. Very little new GOP legislation is likely to happen before 2022.
3. The outlook is bleak and getting worse for GOP Senators (including Mitch McConnell) as the campaign unfolds.
4. The leading Democratic contender (Joe Biden) has made defeating Donald Trump the centerpiece of his campaign. Joe Biden is a MUCH weaker candidate against an incumbent President Mike Pence than against President Donald Trump.
The GOP has a third and long on their own 40 with 25 seconds left to play and no timeouts. They are behind by 4, so a field goal doesnt do it. They need a touchdown. They need a way to win the 2020 elections.

(3,490 posts)that McConnell trusted Trumps mischaracterization that the memo was harmless. He thought releasing it would end the problem and didnt realize it contained clear evidence of an impeachable offense. McTurtle would never put country before party.

(48,986 posts)them in a data profile of you.
And everyone who clicks on it.
First: it starts with Google Leads at DoubleClick.net, the biggest data miner.
Second: it is an opaque link. It will lead (I won't click) to some website somewhere with some unknown agenda that might include phishing and other tricks. You don't say that link leads to CSPAN. It might not. You say it is about CSPAN, but it could be an article somewhere else about CSPAN making that choice.
Third: it is unnecessary. You probably visited that site from a mobile device through an app or you have posted a search engine hit link. Visit the site in a browser to get a URL that starts with the actual site, not an obfuscated indirection. Then trim the link at the end if it contains code after a question mark. Trim bits off the end at ampersands (including dropping the ampersands) and try the link again until you get it the shortest. Then post that.
I do it regularly and I have created an artificial example for you. They all go to the same page:

I also went to the CSpan site https://www.c-span.org/ to search for that list for a direct URL but couldn't find it.

(43,115 posts)Is everything a football analogy in this stupid country?
Perseus
(4,341 posts)No matter what other sport you are watching, Tennis, Golf, etc., American Football analogies are used, in politics, in shows where nothing remotely can compare. So yes, everything is a football analogy in this country.

(6,916 posts)1. The law very clearly says this must be released. So McConnell didnt want any Republicans on record about this.
2. This is a way to drop a tiny marker now that most people will ignore, and if Trump is impeached Fox can point to this and say Republicans wanted it all along.

(61,585 posts)Republicans don't care about saving our Republic. All they care about is getting re-elected and having the majority in Congress so they can pass laws to enrich themselves and their buddies.
The Republicans disgust me.

(11,537 posts)The last thing our fractured country needs is a dishonest zealot like Pence in the White House. This is likely why he has been maintaining a low profile. There is a reason Manafort personally selected Pence and, without a doubt, the conniving Moscow Mitch has a plan.

(24,262 posts)Biden is a "much weaker" candidate against Pence than he is against Trump. Where are the facts to back that up?
Buckeyeblue
(5,499 posts)There will be stronger candidates that will run. And Pence was too much of an enabler for Trump. And Pence has the charisma of an old sock.

Nikki Haley will be the next president, with a Republican House and Senate.

(5,499 posts)I would be more worried about Rick Scott getting the nomination. Hopefully there is enough concern about not repeating what we just went through to get out the vote.

(32,610 posts)... then maybe the Democratic Party needs to rethink its strategy. Will Joe Biden be the best candidate to go up against Pence? I'm not so sure, maybe Liz Warren might be a better choice.
Certainly Uncle Joe is our strongest and most experienced executive who would be ready to take over the reins on Day 1. The huge task of rebuilding our government from the malfeasance and treacheries of Donald Chump - that would scare most people off. But I believe Biden can do it, with substantial help from a lot of excellent and experienced Democrats.
But my question is about the campaign (not the presidency) and maybe Liz Warren might be better at leading the charge against Mike Pence? I believe she could make mincemeat of him in a one-on-one debate. Liz could certainly win over some (maybe many) women who have had it up to HERE with Chump. She won't win the racist/misogynist voters, but then, neither will Joe Biden.
I don't know, what do you guys think?

(10,008 posts)Simple easy catchy sound bites to rally their non critical thinking base.
Add Pelosi, California, Squad, Socialist, Liberal, etc. to any words and the base will have a visceral fear and hatred response regardless of facts.
Most sane Republicans have left the legislature. The party is relying on a dwindling in numbers, but very reliable voting base.
Mitch will do what is best for Mitch when the time comes. Mitch would retire rather than serve in a Senate with a Democratic leader.
No one wants Pence so there will be a power struggle for the next generation of conservative leaders.
