Rolling Thunder chief predicts biker descent on DC if Dems impeach Trumphttps://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/white-house/rolling-thunder-chief-predicts-biker-descent-on-dc-if-dems-impeach-trump
Leaders of the veterans group Rolling Thunder are poised to roar back to Washington to defend President Trump if Democrats move to impeach him.
They say Trump hasn't changed their mind about ending their annual massive Memorial Day biker gathering. But some bikers will be back to demand House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., halt impeachment proceedings if she cranks them up.
I think he's doing a great job, and I wish Nancy Pelosi and her cronies would get off his back, executive director Artie Muller said Thursday after returning to New Jersey from the groups final planned national gathering in Washington.
Muller predicted a large convergence that would feature not just bikers, but patriotic Americans.
Muller, 74, a former Army sergeant who served in Vietnam, said he appreciates that Trump speaks the truth and said he considers Pelosi an arrogant little bitch.
...
Is this the "civil war" Trump is threatening?

(10,721 posts)The Republican electorate represents an epidemic. Doing away with Trump is important but it's not a cure. 50 years of increasingly batshit crazy rhetoric and policy made Trump possible. Democrats and the media must be blunt about that with which we're dealing. We must find a way to do more than combat various symptoms.

(11,767 posts)That to them is "the truth" despite it not being the truth at all. Remember that a lot of these guys were the conservative boys who went to war for glory in the 60's when the "dirty hippies" were protesting.
My dad volunteered for service in Vietnam despite not being a citizen. He came home and wanted nothing to do with the military or government for some time. He was a registered Republican until we made him vote for Clinton in 92, then after Bush Jr. he never looked back. The reason he was for Nixon at the time was because he really believed that Nixon brought the boys home and Johnson escalated the war.
A lot of these guys in "Rolling Thunder" (consequently the name of a military operation in Vietnam that was meant to demoralize the North Vietnamese and Vietcong but failed miserably) are probably White, and never allowed themselves to understand what actually sent them over to Vietnam (not Democrats, not Republicans, but money and people wanting to maintain wealth and trade). They think Trump tells the truth because he blames people that they can look down upon for America's problems, when it is actually wealthy and powerful people who want to maintain that wealth by pitting the rest of us against each other.

(30,678 posts)Are still fighting "the war", as you put it.
Our involvement started when I was about five, and ended when I turned 18.
It consumed our lives figuratively and literally.
Before it was over, we got rid of Nixon.
It made me who I am today, the person here on DU who believes in a better America.

(13,054 posts)Rolling Thunder was formed as a group of Vietnam vets concerned about the fact-free concern that there were scores of US service members still being held in Vietnam. However, the group has been active in obtaining mental health care for veterans and providing escorts for funerals of service members to counter protests by the Westboro Baptist Chuch wackos.
If it's become just another right-wing loony group, it has abandoned the reasons for its formation.
Come on guys, sure it was a few years ago, but you once took an oath to defend the Constitution. Act like you remember it.

(151,424 posts)since I'm in the same age group. If they're ex-military, they wear that badge proudly, with hats and patches and all that sort of thing. Some are even combat veterans, but they are less common. I don't usually run into ex-cops, though, as part of these aging bikers.
I'm a veteran, but I never broadcast that information. I don't have any hats with old insignia on them, or "colors" that tout my military service. I can't see the utility of such things. I also don't question those who do wear that paraphernalia. There's no point to that, either. Politically, I have nothing in common with such folks. I know none who are not "True Trumpers."
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)I am ex-military also, retired. Somewhere down the line these folks found a home with the biker crowd. Its a odd juxtaposition, back in the 60s the bikers were very unsavory, to be mild. Very anti-war, very anti-establishment. I dont broadcast my service at all anymore. Except for here, a little. Just not worth it.
