I had always assumed that he would still be a major force in American politics after he leaves office. He would probably lead a vocal sect of neo-fascists. Now I'm wondering if they might treat him like a pariah. That would make sense because he's dragged his party down to defeat (once again, I'm assuming that he loses).
What do you think? Will he still be the leader of the republican party? Will he lead just a small cult? Or will he slither under a rock somewhere and be forgotten?

a movement we must resist.
I doubt he would run again if he loses, but he will continue to be spokesman for his millions of dead enders. trump and his cult of deplorables are unique in American history.

(20,868 posts)Nazis who are now a sizeable chunk of their party ? They're not going anywhere in a hurry, and will still be susceptible to nutjobs running for office over ordinary conservatives. If the GOP get a massive beating in 2020, which I think will happen, it could signal the end of the Republican Party.

(10,943 posts)... "establishment" Republicans will want him to go away. The Deplorables regard him as divine, and I don't think they will change easily.

(9,263 posts)we will see a pretty good destruction of the GOP as a a party as a significant percentage of republicans/conservatives will veer even harder to the right which allows the doors to be open for democratic wins in redstates. The hardcore right shift can win a primary BUY makes winning a general election extremely difficult in states even like Georgia, Alabama, NC, SC, etc. As a party the GOP will likely cease to exist as a force

(54,330 posts)they'll treat him like he's got the plague. If their voters and donors decide Don is a sympathetic figure and their great savior was wronged, they'll go in the opposite direction. Like Trump, they're all about themselves.

(15,469 posts)blame him on us, he was actually a democrat, not a "true conservative."
But, IF we can win the election there is going to be a VERY tenuous period where control of the country will be in play. He WILL move to remain in office, and a coin flip as to how the party at large acts. They are so craven and are so afraid of "the base" which he will tweak into a complete fury, as well as their deranged hatred of all things liberal/democratic ...
YOU will see scumbags like Jordan and Gaetz who back his play ... Just not sure how many if any, will step up to manage the transition.

(3,463 posts)I have long believed that when they finally start disowning Trump, theyll find some way to blame it on Democrats. Either He was never really one of us or Why couldnt those stupid libtards beat him? Or some other nonsense. Theyll never take responsibility for Trumpism.

(65,145 posts)Meanwhile, they'll be casting about for a smart Trump - someone to engage the MAGATs with less of a propensity to shit his pants in public. That'll take them a while.
