Mods: This is not a discussion of the Dem primary. This is a discussion of Russian influence. Please don't lock this.
Hillary triggered an important discussion and I think it's spun off track, even here at DU.
Tulsi is merely the latest ambitious, talented and flawed candidate that the Russians are seeking to empower. And she won't be the last. But it's important and interesting to look back a bit at how the influence works.
I came across this Twitter thread which was started over a year ago, and has been tracking the growth of Russian influence in real time.

(7,964 posts)The one document lists the late Ron Dellums as a former Republican congressman. He was in fact a very liberal Democratic congressman from Berkeley and former Mayor of Oakland. Who is this Patrick guy that is being quoted here?

I guess that means some staffer could have come up with the wrong title. Still would like to know who the Patrick guy is.

(12,522 posts)I have been uncomfortable for a bit of time with her and then yesterday I read an article on Jacobin about her (Tulsi Gabbard is Not Your Friend [link:https://jacobinmag.com/2017/05/tulsi-gabbard-president-sanders-democratic-party]. It was in-depth and explained a lot.
Folks supporting her said: she supports Medicare for All, a $15/hour national minimum wage, massive new gun control laws, a woman's right to choose, LGBTQ equality, restoration of the Glass-Steagall act, and marched with protesters at Standing Rock. All good things, but something still makes my spidey senses tingle.

(61,857 posts)We can't on one hand state that we believe evidence of disinformation and Russia fingerprints all over the 2016 pro-trump effort - and then not believe it if it is "inconvenient" for us because it discredits our preferred candidate, as an example.
If it is happening in front of our eyes in full sunlight...it is happening.

(10,721 posts)...denying what is becoming increasingly clear is flat-out inexcusable. I say that as someone who likes O'Rourke and Buttigieg, who - as I understand - has also defended Gabbard.

(52 posts)That is undemocratic. That is what we must fight against. But like this thread, she must be labeled for what she is. Information is our weapon not the arbitrary use of power, like Russia.

(10,721 posts)What keeps her from having to go, as I put it, is that people are still defending her and her use of a Russian agent as a top advisor. Gabbard's gotta go.

of being a mole and she outed herself by her reaction to Hillary's warning, which mentioned no name, of there being Russian influence in one of our presidential campaigns.
Btw, enjoy your stay here.

I worry we may be playing into exactly what she wants if she is a tool of the Russians. She is already playing the victim card. She will use that to justify a third-party run. There will be people who believe her, think she has been treated unfairly, and will support her. I believe it is best that we put out the information with no comment. Do not tell people what to think, they will judge for themselves.

(9,327 posts)its not about Gabbard, its about a corrupted GOP crime family that refuses to do anything about it. Quit making it about our candidates and lets talk about who really is to blame.

(58,785 posts)We do know both Sanders and Gabbard have been quietly accepting Russia's use of them as weapons in its war against the U.S. We do not know that either has colluded in it. Both are being rejected by large majorities of Democratic voters.
Yes, the Republican Party has been extensively influenced, infiltrated and funded by Russia and has been acting extensively in the interests of Russia against those of the U.S. Large numbers of Republicans support what their leaders are doing, in their zealous opposition to the Democratic Party and liberalism many regarding a vicious murdering dictator like Putin as the kind of leader America needs.
We can state all that responsibly because it has been investigated and documented by our intelligence services, the Mueller Report, the bipartisan Senate intelligence committee report just released, and top-level investigative journalists from around the planet.
But that's exactly why we have to stop this infiltration, comparatively failed as it is. Accepting NO Russian subversion within our party and especially of our vulnerable minds within our electorate is the only acceptable response to what we know.

(10,943 posts)... how quickly Tulsi and Tucker were chumming it up on FOX. And, then, how all the media jumped on what Hillary said... read what Hillary said and Tulsi's replies, again. One said things much more shocking than the other... including things that were obviously false.
