TALLADEGA, Ala. Donald Trump is beloved in Alabama: Its the state that hosted his first major political rally as a presidential candidate, then voted for him by a nearly 30-point margin.
But the states freshman Democratic senator, Doug Jones, couldnt seem to care less. Easily the most vulnerable Senate incumbent on the ballot next year, Jones is talking and voting as if hes totally unburdened by the fact he represents one of the most conservative states in the nation.
Trumps nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court? Jones said Kavanaughs accuser Christine Blasey Ford was "credible and courageous" and voted against the judge. The presidents border wall? Jones is happy to defend voting against Trump's national emergency using military funds to build it. As for impeachment? The senator is plainly troubled by the presidents conduct and sounds open to the possibility of voting to oust him.

(82,849 posts)Might as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb. But how knows? Maybe enough Alabamians have become sick of this never-ending spectacle in Washington, and figure that it's time for a change. Might as well present them with a distinguishable alternative than a pale imitation.

(41 posts)and I called his office today to suggest that if Bradley Byrne wins the republican primary for his seat next year that he should be sure to use Byrne's involvement in today's SCIF stunt against him.

(3,695 posts)He's clearly a man of strong character who has taken up positions and causes that are not popular in Alabama. I'm sure there will be opportunities for him in a Dem administration when we win the WH.

(706 posts)It was a rare turn of events that got Doug elected last time. Repubs usually do a better job hiding their pedo's like roy moore and won't make the same mistake again.
