Pelosi and Schiff didn't take the bait and throw the Republicans in the briar patch by escalating the situation, Maetz and his people didn't get what they wanted - footage of them being arrested and hauled away - but instead, they look silly and desperate, the press is calling it a stunt, and now the situation looks like it's back to normal with the testimony about to continue and impeachment still very well on track.
And the world can see that Trump and his henchmen have NOTHING to fight back with other than theatrics.
Nicely done, Democrats - way to stay focused and not get thrown off your game by a bunch of two-bit nitwits.

Now that the photo-op flopped, what wll be the concrete, if lower-key, follow up on them for these actions?
It was also very unfair to the witness, who is probably exhausted. It's three thirty PM. These depositions have been running around nine or ten hours apiece.

(1,852 posts)This was a political stunt that has no real-world ramifications. No reason to arrest and give them video to run on FOX for the next two years. This now justifies armed police to monitor the next SCIF meeting so they can't pull this BS again. And Dems can also now justifiably investigate the stunt itself and lay down punishment in accordance with House rules. This showboating will be a big hit with their Faux News fanbase, but will do nothing to move the people they need to move - Independents.

(15,124 posts)another instance of bringing a butter knife to a gun fight. The objective of Gaetz MAY have been (I have no idea what motivates this damaged child) simply to stop the testimony of Ms Cooper and get their ridiculous "process objection" repeated a gazillion times on TV. If so, "Mission Accomplished!"
As I said above, you may be correct and I hope you are. But, I still have too much "wrong side of the tracks" in me to say I would not have enjoyed seeing Matt Gaetz "cuffed and stuffed".

Atticus
(15,124 posts)next two weeks. Now, we can plausibly claim to be "the adults in the room". If today's stunt is repeated without serious consequences, we could plausibly be seen as "doormats".
I sincerely hope your assessment proves to be correct.

And I think anyone who says they won't vote for Democrats because they're think we're "doormats" is full of shish. They weren't going to vote for Democrats anyway and are just making up excuses.
Atticus
(15,124 posts)if, as I also stated above, there are several more incidents where these childish thugs are permitted to break all the rules without consequence, that will, in my opinion, cost us votes; votes that we might have gotten "but for" the perception---"what people think"---that we are "weak".
And, votes cast by people who are "full of shish" count just as much as those cast by the smartest, best informed and most morally motivated among us.
Thanks for your involvement and your enthusiasm.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)we can always make all kinds of dire predictions based on any number of series of "ifs."
And I think you're missing my point about the people who are full of shish. They're full of it because they don't intend to vote for Democrats anyway, no matter what we do, but claim say it's something we did or didn't do that makes them vote or not vote the way they do. I'm kind of like the people who claimed they would be so upset if the Democrats didn't try to impeach Trump that they wouldn't vote or vote third party, thereby letting Trump win reelection. Bullsh!t.
So worrying about whether these people think we're "doormats" or adjusting our behavior to prevent them from saying we are is a fool's game since what we do or don't do has absolutely nothing to do with how they vote.

Trump Backed GOP Plan to Protest Inquiry: Impeachment Update
Source: Bloomberg
Trump had advance knowledge and supported a protest by Republicans who told him they planned to barge into a secure hearing room on Capitol Hill where Democrats are holding impeachment testimonies, according to four people familiar with the matter.
Trump on Tuesday met with about 30 House Republicans at the White House to talk about the situation in Syria and the impeachment inquiry. During a nearly two-hour meeting, which focused mostly on the impeachment inquiry, lawmakers shared their plans to storm into the secure room, the people said. Trump supported the action, saying he wanted the transcripts released because they will exonerate him, the people said.
About two dozen GOP House members occupied the secure hearing room early Wednesday, delaying a scheduled deposition."

(27 posts)....Wikipedia page and could not stand the lack of context. So I edited it to have context. I've bolded what I added:
TaylorSondland texts
Taylor arrived in Ukraine a month after the abrupt ousting of Ambassador Yovanovitch and the inauguration of the country's new president Volodymyr Zelensky. But following President Donald Trump's phone call with the new Ukranian president, Taylor questioned Trump's motivation in a text to Gordon Sondland, the United States Ambassador to the European Union: "Are we now saying that security assistance and WH meeting are conditioned on investigations?" Sondland told him to phone.
On October 3, 2019, it was revealed that Taylor had expressed, in text messages, concern that President Trump may have withheld aid to Ukraine unless they investigated two right-wing conspiracy theories. One, about alleged corruption in Ukraine involving former Vice President Joe Biden. The other, an attempt to deflect from the US intelligence communities' consensus determination that Russia hacked the DNC and interfered with the 2016 presidential election, by suggesting without evidence, that the DNC is hiding the hacked server in the Ukraine. The server conspiracy, is derived from, and in support of a third right-wing conspiracy theory. This one suggests that former DNC employee Seth Rich actually leaked the DNC emails and that Hillary Clinton had him murdered for it.
Implicit through Taylor's testimony is that Trump's goal in withholding the congressionally mandated military aid to Ukraine was to extort newly inaugurated president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, into announcing an investigation into the theory related to Biden in a primetime American television interview. At the time, and through much of the proceeding nascent Democratic Party Presidential Primary Election season, Biden was the leading candidate, and seemed likely to be the Democratic Party challenger to Trump in the 2020 United States Presidential Election. Additional incentive was provided for Ukraine to do as Trump and Guliani suggested, by implying that Zelensky would get a state visit to the White House if he complied.
According to transcripts released by the house impeachment probe, Taylor on September 9, 2019, at 12:47:11 AM texted, "I think it's crazy to withhold security assistance for help with a political campaign." On October 22, 2019 Taylor's opening statement also explained that Sondland required that Zelensky make public statements announcing an investigation, forcing him to conduct one, before the US released the allocated military aid. Taylor said he feared that Trump would withhold the military aid anyway, handing Moscow everything it wanted from the betrayal, texting Sondland that his "nightmare is that they the Ukrainians give the interview and don't get the security assistance. The Russians love it. (And I quit.)."
How's that for context?

If that is the case, how would a cell phone even be operable in a room such as that? I know the phone can record and video, but it would seem that they would be unable to receive a signal. Does anyone know more about this than me? Presumably, the designers of such a security facility would have neutralized the effectiveness of a cell device.
