1) It would protect his ego against implications of illegitimacy.

2) It would support his "witch hunt" narrative and help him maintain his soft support (those who still approve of him but not strongly).

The problem, of course, is that there's no there there. And he's finding it difficult to come up with anyone (be it Zelensky or Italy's PM) who will help in his endeavor to muddy the water.
