After a brief break from howling gusts, residents and firefighters in Northern California's Sonoma County braced for more ferocious "Diablo winds" Saturday, prompting new evacuations of at least 50,000 people near the roaring Kincade Fire.
The Sonoma County Sheriffs Office called the evacuations the biggest in the county in more than a quarter-century.
We need our community members to take these warnings seriously ... it's time to drop things, pack and go, said Healdsburg Mayor David Hagele, one of two towns on the evacuation list.
At a news conference, Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli called the rapid approach of wildfires a life threatening situation and a danger to our entire town.
The 900 residents of Geyserville cleared out on Friday.
The Kincade Fire in the wine-growing county north of San Francisco has already destroyed nearly 39 square miles and 49 buildings, including 21 homes.

(58,785 posts)I imagine a good majority left with pre-packed bags bags in acceptably gassed-up cars for predetermined destinations. Many will stay with friends and relatives a normal California sort of drive away.
Our friends in a Florida coastal MH park have been taking their granddaughter (whose parents both work through hurricanes in ERs) not to stay with friends inland, of whom they have plenty, but to play with other children in a public shelter. What they'll need is kept packed and ready to go in a shed. Works for them.
A fair number will probably camp. Out west there's always lots of open, empty land, and no one ever knows who or what technically owns most of it.

(11,470 posts)Is a parking lot. I am from that area my daughter lives there and many friends, last fire house she was renting burnt down and she lost everything, kids dont think of renters insurance.
This time she moved across town, no where near the hills but we have friends and family that have had to evacuate and one friends husband and mom refused to go. Everyone is upset at them, they are in the area told to leave.
The smoke is real heavy all over town. A lot of people have a sort of Ptsd this is all bringing up a very bad horrible time. My daughter had only 2 min to leave house with nothing when smoke alarm went off at 2 am and most houses on her street on fire with fire balls and limbs full of fire blowing in the crazy wind that she had to drive through to escape. That is coming back to a lot.

(58,785 posts)Most of the 50K told to evacuate are leaving or sitting in what have become close to parking lots, like here in Florida. We've done short evacuations in both California and Florida. By far most people aren't fleeing for their lives, and they're not panicking. Many are aggravated and upset according to their natures, and of course worried about their homes and often economic issues.
Hope all stays good for you and yours. Every burnt area this year is one that won't burn badly for the next handful of years, though that brings its own problems of course.
